in fact im not exactly happy about this.

you have to have a license to open carry a handgun
you have always had to have a license to conceal carry a handgun

you can open carry long guns.

They were associated with "Open Carry Texas", that's why they're carrying rifles (rifles being legal). The backlash it created was to allow open carry of handguns.

So tell me again about how this is a win for people who want harsher gun control? Before people like those shown started wandering around carrying rifles, people couldn't carry handguns, so where's the harsh restrictions? Isn't being able to now carry a rifle or handgun a less harsh restriction than just rifles?

Not only that but there are around 30 or so states that currently permit open carry (either unrestricted, or with a carry permit), so it's not like there hasn't been an "in the wild" running test going on in each of those 30 odd states for years. It's not a completely radical and pioneering move by Texas, no it's pretty pedestrian, and well traveled ground.
agree.. a bit too pedestrian for me... and certainly NOT ground breaking. in fact a bit weak kneed if you ask me.

Americans have an absolute obsession with firearms in a way few places outside of warzones have. But given the US has some of the highest crime rates of any Western nation, I guess this is to be expected. Personally, I don't get the attraction. It has, to me, always seemed like the realm of the paranoid, the wannabe hero, or weirdos who enjoy killing animals.

I also find it strange how there are plenty of restrictions on things like the 1st Amendment and speech, but god forbid there is even a single one on owning objects with, if we're really being honest, only one real purpose. Strange priorities to say the least.
