I doubt very seriously that was a Catholic parochial school and if so was not the reason she got axed.
It was, and yes it was the reason, as local gays made a great deal of fuss about a 'homophobe' in the local media at the school. liberal gays often regard as homophobia the simple belief that gay marriage is not moral
Gay marriage is a fact (and has been for over a decade). Homosexuality is a fact. These should be taught, just like you learn about other religions in world history and world geography classes. My Jewish beliefs aren't threatened by learning about Hinduism or Christianity, even though neither would be acceptable in my life based on my beliefs. The same is true of gay marriage and homosexuality.
Evolution was taught in my high school in the rural South. Students (and their parents) did not hesitate to let our biology teacher know they did not believe in evolution. Should they have been allowed to opt-out of that as well? Nope.
Gay marriage is a fact just because someone decides to redefine marriage? Marriage has always been between a man and a woman. That's a fact. A student with two fathers or two mothers is not normal either.

No one is forcing you. You are free to fail the class as many do today.
Cultures have a lot to do with social issues. Some cultures aren't very big on womens rights, that is a social issue. Plus cultures evolve constantly in regards to social issues. The culture in the US has evolved on social issues since the beginning. Slavery, voting rights, segregation, interracial marriage, now same sex marriage.
