Why isn't the news giving similar coverage of this case they gave the DC Sniper case? Is it that DC is practically home for many news reporters/agencies while Colorado seems so far from national news networks? I'm not saying they aren't covering the story, it just seems to be downplayed compared to the DC Sniper case.
The beltway sniper shooting coverage took awhile to ramp up, too. The earliest incidents weren't anywhere near DC; the very first shooting was on the other side of the country in Tacoma, Washington. Here in Colorado, authorities have just begun to make connections between events, which originally didn't appear to be connected. We still don't know what exactly is happening. I'd prefer not to see a panic. Untwist your panties, please.
The story is on the front page of 9News. It started with some mysterious shootings at cars on the I-25 corridor in Northern Colorado. A bullet was recovered from one scene in which a driver was hit in the neck. She survived. In the other incidents, cars windows were shot out, but no bullets were recovered. Another shooting involved a cyclist near Windsor and was fatal. The latest shooting involved a man out walking at night in Loveland and was also fatal. It's just been recently that the evidence from these very different cases were linked by forensic evidence.

That could be one of the reasons but Colorado received a fair share of national media coverage as far as mass shootings in the past.
Yeah, the weather here has been really wacky lately, and we're battening down the hatches for more severe storms today! As for the shootings in NoCo, they are alarming to those of us who live here. We're not sure what's going on, but some public events, including a festival/fun run, have been canceled in the interest of public safety. I don't think there's any great conspiracy to keep the incidents out of the media (CNN interviewed the young woman who survived one of the original incidents); it's just that the shootings have taken awhile to connect with forensic evidence. And the OP needs to keep in mind that there have been very few incidents to work with so far, all of which have been quite different. Also, Colorado media has had its hands full with the James Holmes trial, the severe weather, and yesterday's SWAT fiasco in a Denver suburb. (Google it and weep at the photos -- those poor homeowners! ) In any case, I'm very hopeful that NoCo authorities will get these shootings sorted out soon and arrest the perpetrator(s).

"Why isn't the news giving similar coverage of this case?"
The same reason why anything that happens in NY City gets loads more coverage then when the same thing happens outside of NY City
To be fair, a lot of us living in the center of the country have coastal connections. The Baltimore riots were of great interest to this Colorado family, because we lived there a few years ago. Nonetheless, if you Google the NoCo shootings, you'll find that they have been covered by national media. Making this into another Beltway Spree Shooter situation, however, seems a tad premature.
