According to the media you are basically nothing unless you are:

Gay

Transgender

In your 20s or 30s, and look great!

Multiethnic

Politically Correct (without using that word), and angry about what someone in the public eye has said

Constantly communicating via Social Media

Love multiculturalism

Have lots of tattoos

Live in a hip part of a chic town like Portland, Seattle, Austin, LA, NYC, Boston, DC or Miami.

Spend lots of money on all the things Madison Avenue tells you to buy

Constantly looking into a Smart Phone, or another high tech screen, all day.

(Am I missing something?)

Given that list, that covers 80% of people in the United States

Especially given that smartphone comment

That list describes a lot of people, and since you aren't saying you have to be ALL of the things on the list, I'd say that the media looks at... most people.

You have to be MOST of these things to be legitimate in the eyes of the media. Are You?

So, why does "the media" have your knickers in a knot?

Allowing a media to define your values is a choice.

Apparently a number of media sources that say no such things.

I wonder what % I fall under?

I am not gay, transgender, in my 20-30's, multiethnic, politically correct, constantly on FB and the others, do not love/nor hate multiculturalism, have no tattoos, do not live in a hip chic town, do not spend money on useless things from Madison Avenue, or constantly glued to my Android..

I am straight, think FB is a waste of time (yea, I have an account but visit rarely) never had or wanted a tattoo, love my quiet, safe small town, frugal with money, always trying to find ways to save it. Like a great financial analyst said: "It's not how expensive your house is or your car, but rather, how much debt you put yourself in to get those beautiful things? The peace of mind comes from how you use your money because in the end, feeling secure about where you are financially, (money=security) is more important than having a boat-load of debt!"
