Name should be used for the race of African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants to the USA?
"Black" and "African American" are two totally different descriptions. There are millions of white people in Africa and millions of black people who have never been to Africa.
Now I have a new question: since Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory for well over 100 years, was there ever segregation there? Remember, there are two totally different races that in large number live on the island.
I don't know about in Puerto Rico but in America the draft boards who take a visual glance before deciding if a Puerto Rican went into the general manpower pool or was segregated into the Colored units of the Army.

Ironically, recent immigrants from Liberia in a way have a right to identify as "African American" (INSTEAD of "Liberian American") because the nation of Liberia was created by former slaves who fled the USA for their homeland in the Old World. But I wonder... did the original African American settlers of Liberia intermarry with people from other African countries, people who had lived in Africa since time immemorial?
And what right to the term "African American" do Cuban Americans of African origin have? Or Puerto Ricans of African origin either on the island or in the 50 states?
All people living in America, whether citizens or at least here legally are AMERICAN...PERIOD. I do not recognize all this crap of identifying "with" other countries. One is an American or not an American.

If I had gone to sleep 6 years ago like Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle, and woke up today, I would not recognize America. It has been virtually destroyed.
I prefer Black American. Yes Afro-caribbeans, Afro-latinos and people from Africa can also be black too, but they have a different historical context. I don't necessarily find African-American offensive, but it is inaccurate and seems to give racists more ammo to claim we should "go back to Africa" though many of us have been here longer than the complainers.

All the government has to do is provide an African/African descent category. Then list:
Black American
Afro-Caribbean
Afro-Latino
African
Other African descent
They have enough categories for Asians and Hispanics. It can be done for people of African origin as well.
