Until very recently, the Illinois employee percentage was under 2% (now it's 18%, and employees are dropping the defined benefit plan in droves for the defined contribution plan)
I'm not seeing that. Almost all are under 10%, and many are under 5%:

Insane. We need to spread this wealth around. Do you really need $100K to enjoy retirement? The rich need to pay more.

This seems unsustainable.

But I don't live in New York, so what they pay their FF is none of my concern.

May they live long and prosper.

The pensions and benefits are unsustainable and not just firemen, down the line this will most certainly be an issue.

It's not just NYC.

Most municipalities are challenged to meet their pension obligations.

Something is going on in Dallas whereby the city decided to pay firefighters less than other municipalities in the area in exchange for a " gold- plated retirement plan.

Be aware that Plano, Texas starts fire fighters at about $ 20,000 more a year than NYC despite a substantially lower cost of living in Plano. It appears they may have realized it was less costly in the long run to pay well while firefighters are active instead of generous retirement benefits after 20 years of service.

100K in NYC is like 30K in other places.

How is it the government employees fault that real estate is so expensive in the area? The average rent for a 1br apt not in the ghetto is $3500.

How are civil servants supposed to be able to afford living in these areas?

Dude, I'm from there. They split to Florida the second they get their pension and lifetime medical/dental.

And the reason the real estate is so expensive is because everyone else has to pay for the government employees triple platinum lifestyle.

I agree, the pensions should be based on where you reside in retirement. So if you retire in Florida you get $40K, Costa Rica $10K etc.
