Nope, far from it. I'm just some $_chmuck that works in a Cube farm, making the same I did 15 years ago in a career I've been in for 24. Every year my check gets smaller and smaller...

Well then my apoligies. You've been duped and I hope you wake up soon.
I have friends in NY who are fire men and theirs is a tough job with a lot of stress. After 20 years their bodies are damaged and they have a rough time moving around. I see no reason to bash firemen, police or any civil servant.
Just another way to split people. Fox news is at it again. Deflect.
I agree with the above
Also, you all complaining are ignoring 9/11 and how many fire fighters suffered disabilities based on the environmental effects of the working conditions at the twin towers. And you are ignoring the fact that running into burning buildings is VERY dangerous work and in and of itself poses great health risks. I would bet that most firefighters become legally disabled after working for 20-30 years. Same with police officers IMO and both deserve the money.
Even though they also get trampled upon, I believe teachers deserve it too. They are intricately involved in the success of American society (firefighters, police officers, teachers, etc) and there is no reason IMO why they should have to live a poor life in their golden years after giving so much to their communities for practically their entire adult lives.
Everyone should get their piece of American pie, before there is none left. People in power are ensuring there won't be.
Actually, they're doing exactly the opposite by propping up the stock market. Those pensions? They require those oh so evil corporate profits for sufficient growth and funding. Take a look:
American workers and retirees depend on their $24 Trillion worth of investments in the stock market, etc., to fund their retirement.
In comparison, the 400 richest Americans combined have a net worth of $2.3 Trillion. It's not the rich who benefit the most from corporate profits, it's the American workers and retirees.

As ridiculous as those pensions are, you have to put it in perspective. In NYC (and state) you have teachers retiring and making that much. From a job that only works 2/3 of the year, and with none of the risks or demands that firefighters face. NYC and NYS taxpayers must really love their government workers to treat them so well and give them more in retirement than most people make working.
Well, OK, so the real problem isn't the taxpayer-it's the politicians who are bought with public employee union dollars. Unions by the politicians, who in turn reward them with taxpayer funds. Too bad no one represents the taxpayer in this.

Firefighter shifts do not add up to any more time than teachers, not that they should, this isn't normal work. They are on "tour" for long periods of time, then off for long periods of time. They get a ton of vacation and personal time also.
Nobody goes into the job of being an NY cop or firefighter being told it's safe. You get paid well with fantastic benefits and 20 year retirement with no level of education. That's why the lines to get into these jobs are still long despite the risks.
They pay nothing into their pensions and they are guaranteed. That's an unsustainable situation as the tax base shrinks due to fewer good paying jobs...the only fair alternative is to go after the real wealth, or cut back on their pensions.
This is a very tough situation to discuss, because you will have 9/11 thrown in your face, a horrible but nonetheless rare occurrence. You are going to have taxpayers held hostage by public service unions for many years because of 9/11.
A tax payer funded salary for the rest of their life is "their piece of American pie"?
That's the public service worker mentality...they got theirs, you get yours.
The real comedy is when they try to frame it as "we're keeping hope alive for the middle class!!"
Meanwhile on LI every person who owns a house pays close to $10K in property taxes to make sure cops can retire making over $100K per year for the rest of their lives.
