The Democrat Confederate States seceded because Republicans won and had the noble goal to end slavery.
Perhaps you need to start looking at facts beyond party lines and on ideological grounds. Share if you discover that liberals/progressives are the one opposed to taking the flag down, while conservatives are demanding it.

This thread is about why did the Confederate States secede not about who today wants to take the flag down or not. The flag flying today is not affecting anyone's rights, privileges, job, condition of life. It's a symbol to some people of slavery others to pride in their region and others as a symbol of defiance. Nice try to divert but fail to address the subject.
Well, for those really interested in the history of the war between the states, the groundwork was laid in 1833 under what was called the Force Bill, the fed's answer to the nullification crisis regarding collection of tariffs for the fed by the states. It could have started a war then, but South Carolina finally acceded to the federal demands but told Jackson in no uncertain terms that this was the last time.
As to the drum beating that the war was about slavery, why did Lincoln wait until 1863 to sign the Emancipation Proclamtion and why did the congress not ratify the 13th amendment until 1865? If the war really was all about slavery wouldn't they have done those things in 1861?
Not entirely correct. Yes there where well documented cases of human abuse the evils of Slavery. However some Planation's treated Black as employees and provided for the need s of the people. Not wide spread by any means, but by time of 1861 perception were changing.
Many Blacks fought for the CSA, ironic?

Of course a Bloody Conflict ensued.

Well, you're simplifying.
The actual debate, was whether or not the Federal government had the right to pass laws which benefited some of the states at the expense of the rest. And secondly, if the states who were harmed by the Federal government had any redress.
As Last1out wrote, the Civil War really started under John C. Calhoun's "Nullification crisis" in 1832-1833. And the nullification crisis was effectively built on the concept of nullification which was part of Jefferson's "Kentucky resolution" from 1798.
Jefferson said that our nation was a "compact" between the states. And that the states could nullify any federal laws that they thought were unconstitutional.
If the states are part of a "voluntary union"; Then by the nature of something voluntary, the states comprising the union can leave at any time. This theory was tested in the Civil War, and failed. Because Lincoln did not adhere to the Compact theory.
Lincoln adhered to the American empire theory, once you're in, you're in for life. If you try to leave, we will kill every last one of you if that is what it takes.
