Red eyes are the least of my particular problem. Try HIVES. Are they saying that the pee in the pool water is causing that from a chemical reaction with the chlorine? Really? Of course, chlorine is perfectly safe by itself. Right.
The town where I lives air rates our water system and puts what they say is a safe amount of chlorine in it. So why do I sneeze, cough, and my eyes burn when I turn on the tap water? There is PEE in my tap water reacting to the chlorine? I now buy bottled water.
I broke out in hives from taking a shower until I put a filter on. PEE in my shower water too??????
When we used to have our own pool, I could not be in the garage, let alone stand over it, when my husband opened up the powdered chlorine. My eyes would burn. I would gag. We had to leave the garage door open and aired out for some time before I could go back in there. PEE in powdered chlorine too?
Of course, I am not advocating people pee in pools. That is GROSS. My feeling is that the CDC, again, is trying to control behavior by scaring people. You won't have a reaction from the chemical all by itself?????
Sorry, CDC, I am not buying it. NOBODY is peeing in my tap or water shower.
Go into a pool that has just been chlorinated and see if your eyes don't burn. Also not saying you should pee in the pool but...... Not to get gross but put some chlorine in your eyes or a little pee and tell me which one burns the most.
Chlorine removes the proteins, oils and mucus around your eyes that are there to protect it so it's a trade off. A lot of people would likely get sick without it but I have no idea why the CDC would want to diminish the roll chlorine plays in all of this.
Urine itself is sterile. The problem is anything else that may come out with the urine (if the one peeing has an STD or something). Many, well I have no idea how many but you can read in the extreme sports articles that people have resorted to drinking their own urine when in a bind. Yes there are acids in it that will irritate an eye but why try and diminish the role that chlorine plays?
"CDC: It is Urine in Pools, not Chlorine, Causing Red Eyes"
Actually the CDC says the combination of chlorine and pee is more irritating than just chlorine alone.

I never knew how much bacteria were in pools, especially by the community ones, until I read a few articles on how they would find fecal matter and all kinds of disgusting things swamped in the water. I stopped going years ago.
