The liberals want to force Christians to marry gays in their churches. While many gays simply want to their union to be fully recognized by the government, liberals want to overstep on the doctrines of many religious institutions.
There are more than 40,000 Christian denominations in the U.S. and some have no issue with performing SSM.
Some Liberals oppose SSM. Some Conservatives applaud it.

You have every right to put up a poster on the church door saying "God's word is only for those we deem worthy", and it will be obeyed. Churches have stopped funeral services during the service when they learned the deceased was gay. Churches have refused to marry mixed-race couples, refused to accept black people in their congregation, etc. - it's perfectly legal.
Whether it's something the Jewish Carpenter would have approved of? Different question.
I think it would save people the headache if government just called all of their marriages 'civil unions.' Dumb people wouldn't have to figure out the difference between court marriage and a church marriage, and since reactionaries will ***** and moan no matter what happens, that might as well be what they do.
The reactionaries p.ssed in that well by banning civil unions in dozens of states from the get-go, so while it might have worked as a compromise back then, there's no reason to reward their obstinacy now, is there?
