It's a battle between rational, logical thought and hysterical, emotional lack of thought. It's literally a lack of rational thought.
The worst part is that people don't understand the difference, so they fall for the irrational stuff. If you lay out the logic of how 1 + 1 = 2, all someone has to do is shame you, shout over you, and throw a fit and many people will believe whatever they say 1 + 1 equals. Nobody even has to refute anything you said.
"If you have one apple, and you add another apple, you have 2 apples"
"I CANT BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT. ARE YOU KIDDING? AND WHY COULDN'T IT BE ORANGES? ARE YOU FRUITIST AGAINST CITRUS BECAUSE THEY DON'T GROW WHERE YOU LIVE? SAYING YOU CAN ONLY HAVE 2 APPLES IS SO CLOSED MINDED. MAYBE YOU WANT 3 APPLES...MAYBE YOU WANT 1 APPLE. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE HOW MANY APPLES THERE ARE?"
"Well....one of anything plus one more of that thing gives you...two...things...."
"GET OUT OF HERE YOU XENOPHOBE. YOU'RE NOT WELCOME HERE! BOOOOOOO! Come on everyone, do you support this hate speech?? BOOOOOOEVERYBODYISBOOOOOOOING"
If they weren't so dangerous they'd be pretty funny.
Seriously. They came out of nowhere. Even progressives are finding themselves in irate with these SJW. Cable news is no longer about politics. It's mostly about social justice. Even the Daily Show. Jon Stewart has become a SJW himself.
The "Culture of Outrage" is a serious problem that will hopefully stop once we all get more used to social media. Studies suggest that people pile on the outrage in order to show off how caring they are.
But I hesitate to label anyone advocating for minority and women's rights as an "SJW." Some of these people do have legitimate concerns.
