The US now has the lowest labor participation rate since 1977, with record percentages and raw numbers of unemployed citizens.

Record 93,626,000 Americans Not in Labor Force; Participation Rate Declines to 62.6%

........ yet the unemployment "rate" has fallen to 5.4%!

Remember what Mark Twain said about statistics?

Where I am in Indiana, the economy is healthy and hiring seems to be going at a rapid clip. We can't find technical workers fast enough...according to our management.

That said, where the economy is bad, it's REALLY bad. Back home in Tennessee, the economy is struggling terribly. The area was manufacturing dependent and was on the decline before the Great Recession, which finally toppled it over. Many low and semi skilled workers in the factories and coal mines are now unemployable. Many are over 50, got on disability, and probably won't work again. Young people who want to do better leave the area, leaving the less educated and less motivated. These people often have criminal convictions from the drug problem in the area, and are unemployable or only marginally so.

Your lack of participation is due to an aging population, a crappy economy, and a problem of criminal records and inability to pass a drug test for employment.

You can make statistics say what ever you want? That's what the Obama administration did. As the Obama supporters / defenders continue to struggle it's funny to see them defend him.

Wonder if Obama will do a victory lap? I'm sure the media won't have much to say about this.

The overall labor participation rate peaked in 2000 and has been steadily declining since then and did so despite the housing bubble driving the economy and tax cuts. The female labor participation rate peaked in 1995 and has been declining for 20 years.

The labor participation rate declined 3 percentage points since the Global Great Recession. Appears economists generally agree that 2 points of this decline is attributed to the aging population.

The U.S. Labor participation rate remains higher than Germany, Japan and the UK although all three countries have experienced an increase in participation by females.

Given the aging population, the downward trend is not going to change no matter who sits the oval or hold the majority.

What? Of course he will. If it's bad he blames everyone else, if it's good, he pimp walks in front of the media and gloats. I think he is desperate, oh how he NEEDS the Roman columns and tingle up leg crowds cheering again.

I'd pretty much guarantee a lot of those people would jump back into the labor force if they felt they had a credible chance of finding well-paying, secure employment.

I'm not so certain about that. In the area I live in there is a perception that there is "no jobs" for people but the reality is that too many people are unskilled so are not qualified for high paying jobs.

Anectodal but I am a member of a facebook group for my area that highlights local job opportunities. I'd say nearly 60% of the people, when a job is posted as "do they hire felons" or "is there a drug screen."

Many people cannot find a job due to those reasons alone and we have open positions, even unskilled positions, that go unfulfilled due to people having a criminal background or doing drugs.

Everyone I know who wants a job, even older people who are on disability and went on disability between 2008-2010 when they couldnt' find jobs, now have at least a part time position. People who want to work are working. Those who want to make a specific amount of money or those who are picky/choosy about where they will work are unemployed (in that group we also have people who state they are looking for jobs but don't want to work at McDonald's which is hiring in our area and they pay $10.10 an hour, which IMO is good money for unskilled people in our area as it is pretty cheap to live here)
