Some of the changes proposed in Rep. Capps’ bill are intended to update current terminology in the federal code and avoid instances where improper wording could generate loopholes or make certain laws unconstitutional under the new precedent set by the Supreme Court. For example, a section of the U.S. Code dealing with Family and Medical Leave addresses circumstances in which a “husband and wife” work for the same employer or are both members of the armed services. Replacing that phrase with the term “married couple” would ensure that the law was not interpreted to exclude same-sex couples.

Other sections of the U.S. Code targeted by the bill simply need updating to reflect modern realities in ways that have nothing to do with same-sex marriage. For example, Federal law currently makes it a crime to threaten “the wife of a former President during his lifetime” or “the widow of a former President until her death or remarriage,” wording that makes no allowance for the possibility that a married woman might become U.S. President. Another section of the U.S. Code dealing with the payment of compensation for the disability or death of persons employed at U.S. military facilities situated outside the U.S. limits such payment to “surviving wife and child or children,” language that doesn’t accommodate the circumstance of a married woman’s being employed at an air or naval base.

Oh you poor thang! If I got you a Happy Meal would that make you feel better? Don't you know successful people don't really worry about what others are doing or thinking?

It's only going to get worst, you know. Maybe you should look at moving to Canada?

More than two dozen Democrats have proposed legislation that would eliminate the words "husband" and "wife" from federal law.

Those "gendered terms" would be replaced by "gender-neutral" words like "spouse" or "married couple," according to the bill from Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif.

"The Amend the Code for Marriage Equality Act recognizes that the words in our laws have meaning and can continue to reflect prejudice and discrimination even when rendered null by our highest courts," Capps said. "Our values as a country are reflected in our laws. I authored this bill because it is imperative that our federal code reflect the equality of all marriages."

Now if the rest of government would recognize "that the words in our Laws have meaning............."

Yes.

Slipping something into Law by opinion of the SC is not a victory and is contrary to society that has flat out rejected it almost every single time everywhere when it had a voice.

A false legitimacy is all that has been gained by all of this as it has not changed views and rather antagonized many along the way.

Live in your false new reality but you have not changed society, just what the law (little l) has allowed.

Nothing has been redefined to me, we are still Husband and wife and always will be, I am married and will never see two men or two women as being so, they can pretend but it doesn't make it so. They can eliminate and redefine all they want but it doesn't change anything for me. They can float their boat all they want and I just get a laugh out of it.

I am not exactly a gay marriage advocate, but when the SCOTUS ruled that same sex marriage is a fundamental Constitutional right, how can the legislators NOT change the statutes? How do terms like "husband" and "wife" apply to same sex marriage, especially where there isn't a expressly designated "husband" and a "wife"? It's not about being PC, it's simply a statutory construction matter, what lawyers call "conforming changes."

It's like getting angry at your neighbor peeing on your house after it has burned down to the ground. It doesn't matter at this point, right? The battle, and the war, have been lost as far as you are concerned.

Focus on some other divisive issue, let's move on!!
