Education is the key to our success and continuing success. Great way to bring education to the inner city. There are thousands/millions of kids that have never touched a computer.
With education the phrase. "How will they know where to go if they don't know the way"
pretty well sums it up. Lot's smarter to get them education than send them to prison. They deserve it anyway. They are Americans also.
They deserve it? For what? Why do they deserve it any more than any other American? How exactly do they deserve income I earned more than I do?
Education is key to success, but giving away more working Americans tax dollars isn't going to make it happen. Just because they have "free" Internet isn't going to suddenly make the kids start doing research projects, make their parents pay attention to how they're doing in school or get involved in their kids education. Without all of that their education isn't going to improve just because they can now watch Youtube for free.

We are talking about computers at home and not libraries at all. Sure there are no guarantees in life.Getting people involved with education and providing the proper tools for them is the road to success.

The vast majority of the free bandwidth won't be used by children.
Free internet services is not what gets "children involved in education", that is up to the parents. Free internet is not the road block keeping crappy parents from becoming good parents.
Every school district in my county is providing students with a computer. If they are to do their homework, internet access is a must. The computers block all but school stuff. It is about the only way for parents to get their kids records or communicate with the teacher.
I was concerned when they first started passing out 45000 computers because about 1/3 of the district is low income. The computers need to be charged at home. The additional cost to the parents for electricity about equals the cost of internet access. I was told by the school and an electricity wizard it cost about 10$ a month to keep one charged.
The state intends to put all textbook content on computers and save a bunch of money by not printing books.
I can provide some insight as to what might happen with that. An entire middle school in my county was given laptops to take home. They ended up broken, lost, stolen or sold. This was a low income/underprivileged student body. The program lasted one year. It was a bad deal. Has this proved successful where you are?

Last I heard, the parents had to put up a $275.00 deposit. The schools had to hire a bunch of tech support people. So far, they are still outfitting a couple of schools a year. The program has not been stopped in my district.
The state had to pass special legislation to spend textbook money on computers. That happened last session.
Pearson had the state consulting, testing business for years, but was just replaced, so things may change.
