I appreciate that, As much as we disagree, your country's contribution - and yours - was instrumental.

But seriously, Russia today ain't the Warsaw Pact of the 80s. They'd like to be, it appears, but they just aren't. If anyone back then had started a NATO ex with "For the purposes of this exercise, the following countries will be considered friendly: East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia", we would have considered the idea laughable, ridiculous. (I probably missed some, btw.)

Putin may take measures to preserve power at home and abroad.
Mostly at home. It's depressing, but it appears Russia simply considers it the normal state of things to be led by someone they fear. But - then so be it. We can afford cold war better than they. In the meantime, 1 in 4 Russian males die before age 55.

The Swedes are a civilized people, and want nothing to do with thugs.

The Swedes should avoid NATO.

Oh for cripes's sake. Look at a map. Unless you're going to postulate a seaborne invasion across the Baltic that would make D-day look like a cakewalk, Russia would have to either go though Finland (and I don't think even Putin is itching for that rematch) or long-standing NATO member Norway, in both cases through some of the world's unfriendliest terrain.

Why does neutral Sweden want to join NATO and why the hell does Russia care?

Maybe someone wants to plant some missiles or something there.

Putin likes ABBA, and doesn't want to have to bomb them.

Because Putin doesn't want more NATO countries at his border. The Baltic states are already enough.

Because Russia is buzzing SAS flights with fighter jets, mucking around in Swedish waters, that sort of rot?

Last time I checked NATO expansion of the last 25 years happened without Russian saber-rattling.
