Not Eastern Europe, but the socialist countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Etc. I feel like they are trying to turn us into Europe by taking away freedoms and pushing their liberal/socialist views on us.
They've been trying for a very long time. I'd say for at least as long as I've been alive and aware of the fact that some people have self serving agendas, so at the very least, 20 years, probably even longer than that.
But we still have the original Europeans that left Europe for the very reason they didn't want to be bullied into following the political correctness edicts of the day...and their descendants (me included) would fight this or move to another country that allows free thought and expression....I know, the political correctness bullies will celebrate shutting down free speech advocates like myself.
Freedom of press is ranked every year, and each one of the countries mentioned rank better than US. As a matter of fact all of them are in Top-10 in the world, while US is #46.

What specific freedoms have been or are in the process of being taken away?
The median hourly wage for white males havent increased in 40 years, while output per hour has soared.
Productivity has soared primarily due to technology, followed by " Lean Principles" that eliminate steps that do not create value.
Average real wages have not increased since the 70's for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the babyboom entering the workforce en mass during the 70's, outsourcing to cheaper labor sources, the decline of unions, tech replacing human job functions, activist shareholders demanding higher ROI, employment of undocumented workers.......

Speaking as a liberal, no, I do not want us to turn into Europe. As a matter of fact, I love the capitalistic nature of our economy. I'm thriving in it.
And actually, I have not seen any indication from the left at large that we want the US to turn into a socialist country. So... perhaps you should put on your tin foil hat again?
And yet, they don't want to change the tax structure in the U.S. to make it possible.
European countries tax their citizens VERY differently than does the U.S.:
Quote:
"UC Davis's Peter Lindert has argued in his book "Growing Public" that European social democracies were only able to develop the programs they did because they used efficient consumption taxes that didn't lower growth as much as progressive income taxes, particularly those on capital income. European countries needed tax systems that could raise a lot of money without hurting growth, and only regressive consumption taxes fit the bill."
Look carefully at the Tax Progressivity charts in that article. Unlike here in the U.S. where higher income earners bear the greatest tax burden, lower- and middle-income earners bear the greatest tax burdens in European countries. Their tax revenues are predominantly dependent on REGRESSIVE taxes.
They don't want to pay for what they get, like the Europeans do.

In US Mike Huckabee is a strong supporter of consumption tax based system. Of course he is not suggesting we should have both high income tax, and high consumption tax like Europe does.

We need to ditch this stupid idea that the USA is the only nation with freedom & democracy & capitalism. It does not have to be Europe vs USA. I've got news for some of you, but the USA has SOME freedoms that Euro-nations like Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway (etc.) don't have, but then there are some freedoms that they DO have that we don't. Denmark has freedom of speech/press, voting, property rights, religious rights just like the USA. The only right they don't have is the extent of gun ownership that we have. This DOES NOT make them less free as they choose to live without that. That is freedom thru democratic means. YET, they aren't an American style of capitalist society (but they do practice capitalism). Their form of government has more social programs perhaps - but that does not make their government inferior or less free OR SOCIALIST. If so, then we are already socialist.

The high European income tax rates start at very moderate income levels. Perhaps we should do the same here in the U.S...
Usually don't like to link Wikipedia, but their info is accurately sourced in this case:
The Liberals in Europe are changing Europe and not for the better. Something to keep an eye out for.
