"In an interview with MSNBC host Chris Matthews in which the openly socialist Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was brought up, Wasserman-Schultz was asked, "What is the difference between a Democrat and a socialist?" The stammering Wasserman-Schultz was pressed by Matthews, who said, "I used to think there was a big difference. What do you think?"
She tries to deflect the question by responding to a question he didn't ask - the difference between Republicans and Democrats but Matthews doesn't let go.
"You're the chairwoman of the Democratic Party. Tell me the difference between you and a socialist."
She couldn't answer the question.
Then he pressed her over whether the Socialist would speak at the Democrat convention. She said he would so the incredulous Matthews asked her again about letting a socialist speak? Then he asked if it would be in prime time. She wouldn't say.
Many US government programs are socialist in nature. Medicare and Social Security, both bipartisan, are socialist in nature. So is our education system. We are not 100% capitalist, nor are we 100% socialist. This whole socialism thing started when Obama was elected and Fox News needed a meme to drive.
What do Democrats and the left generally support that American socialists do not generally support?
Actually not much not because the Democratic Party moved to the left but because the socialist (what's left of them) have abandoned Marxist orthodoxy. For example, no true Marxist/socialist would join into a coalition with any party that included billionaire industrialist. In the words of Eugene Debs:
The Republican and Democratic parties, or, to be more exact, the Republican-Democratic party, represent the capitalist class in the class struggle. They are the political wings of the capitalist system and such differences as arise between them relate to spoils and not to principles. With either of those parties in power, one thing is always certain, and that is that the capitalist class is in the saddle and the working class under the saddle.
This is the woman who asked if the rover (while on Mars) could go to the flag (on the moon), that debbie, right?
