There are thousands of people in nursing homes, etc. who are kept alive through artificial means. Are they viable? Sadly, some in our country would say no.

not really. a single cell bacterium on Mars IS a big deal. we have bacteria over every inch of our skin and organs. its infinite here and non existent there. and humans are not on the verge of extinction. not even close.
if fact we have too much "life" here at times hence the need for antibiotics.
So is your argument that a fetus's (which is beyond an embryonic mass of cells, and instead is a formed being with cells that serve specific cooperative functions for a single life) life doesn't matter because it's not endangered?
