Why do public schools in this country want to steer all students to colleges, community colleges, other programs for intelligent people, etc? High schools are failing the working class. Communist revolution, anyone?

We are increasingly a service ,brain based economy. Mfg is just 10% of workforce, and will get smaller (efficiency), robots will replace workers at most rote task jobs in a few years.

Schools need to prepare kids for the world they will live in..not grandpa's world at their age.

Meanwhile, the skilled tradespersons are among the highest earning in the U.S.

Compare what a journeyman plumber, an electrician, or an aircraft mechanic brings home compared to most mid level white collar 'managers' and supervisors.

Many smart people know that trade schooling gives a higher return on investment than many if not most, college degrees.

Communist revolution? Forget that!

Do some research and use common sense.

Wearing a white shirt does not equal success. But journeyman level skilled trade know-how... Does!

Trade school is fine. It is a form of post secondary education. High school is the end of school is a path to a McJob.

Outside of a few very wealthy areas, students who go into skilled trades aren't being shunned at all. Plus, most of these require post high school training, just not in a traditional college setting.

The ones that are getting shunned are the ones with no plans for the future. I think that's a bit unfair on them, because some kids just need a little longer to mature. Not everyone is ready at 18.

Some return a few years later for more education after discovering what life at a McJob is like.

I work for an Engineering and Construction company and it does seem like blue collar construction workers are underpaid compared to their white collar counterparts so I agree with some of the OP's premise. Is this based on supply and demand or something else.

Skilled craftsman though are still highly esteemed and have the ability to start their own companies with their skills.

Agreed but many of the illegal alien fans HATE seeing Americans who work with their hands make a decent living so their kind will try to undercut the tradesmen.

Why though is the USA divided into blue collar and white collar in the first place? The USSR made no such distinctions.
