It's received amazing reviews from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. It's probably a good movie, but you can pretty much guess what's going to happen. I think people are making a bigger deal than it really is.
It's just a movie. Most biographical movies take liberties with the truth.

"On July 16, 2014, a casting call for extras for Straight Outta Compton was released on the Sande Alessi Casting Facebook page. The casting call was looking for African-American girls for the film using an A-D ranking scale. Though the "A girls" category was looking for drop dead gorgeous "classy" women of all colors, the "B through D" categories were very explicitly linked with skin-tone. As the women get less attractive, the casting call wants the women's flesh tone to be darker, with the lowest listing calling for "African American girls. Poor, not in good shape. Medium to dark skin tone."[53] The casting call post went viral as people expressed their outrage of what they call colorism, sexism, and racism in the categorizing of black women.[54] A representative for Sande Alessi Casting said the ad was an "innocent mistake" and when it comes to casting "poor" people, they're also looking for women of various skin tones and body types. As for the A,B,C,D grouping system, Sande Alessi Casting says "it's the usual method [they] use to look for different types of people for any project and it wasn't meant to offend anyone."[55]

I'll be honest with you. That is basically par for the course for anything in Hollywood Colorism is par for the course for any roles. If NWA didn't do that, it would be exceptional.
But my biggest beef with that, is back in the 80s/90s those weren't actually the rules. Pretty/classy came in all shades up till about 2000 or so. Then the shift happened.
But I am sure this movie will continue to do really well. And the audiences "surprisingly" will be mostly white. Which is 100% logical as the biggest consumer of gangsta rap are white.
I enjoyed the movie. Saw it this afternoon. Brought back a lot of memories of growing up, though I was too young at the time to understand the political and social aspects. For me it was just music that I enjoyed.
If a white person chooses to eat vanilla ice cream and does not like chocolate, it is racist.
Yep, literally EVERYTHING is considered racist by someone. There is a Youtuber who does different hair styles, she is really amazing and each video is a "how to video" and one of her hair styles was about dread locks. And some idiot on Facebook made it got semi-viral by saying how this Youtube is racist for stealing Black women's hairstyle.
Luckily there were some people commenting saying, well if she does every hairstyle besides dreads, she would be called a racist for skipping Black hairstyles, so it's not a complete loss, but yes this whole thing is so stupid.
i'm still floored at how well that movie was done.
F. Gary Gray has come a long way.
