You do realize the parties essentially switched roles, right? Democrats were the Southern conservative party and Republicans were the northern progressive party during the era of slavery.
Do you really think a president like Abe Lincoln, who fought against the entrenched status quo and for powerful federal control of states, would ever get support from today's Republican party? No, because Lincoln was a progressive.
Also, it's too simplistic to point to one party. Look at Democratic success stories like Seattle, San Fran / Silicon Valley, Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta, etc..., as well as rural conservative failures of small towns crippled by poverty.
