Yup. So best to keep the shotgun unloaded, so that it can't be used against you or by a family member. There are no universal 100% guarantees in life, are there … ???
But … If I'm in my bedroom, and the burglar/invader is down the hallway, and he hears the -- chck - chck -- it is very, very unlikely that he will run toward the sound of the shotgun slide ...
And yet you think most people shouldn't have guns because it will be stolen and used against them. So which is it, you think people should have guns or they shouldn't because they are irresponsible?
And you still think that people shouldn't need them because the police will be there. How does that work.
Not to mention you still haven't explained what "well-regulated" meant back when the 2nd Amendment was written, or why you think that anyone who believe in the 2nd Amendment is a gun nut.
Best home self defense weapon -- a shotgun. (Kept unloaded, so no family member will be accidentally harmed.)
The distinctive sound of a shotgun slide being operated -- chck - chck -- will send any burglar or invader running for his life ...
Well if the sound is all you need as a deterent why not just have a recording of it on an Mp3 player...you know to avoid having one of those deadly nasty firearms in your house. Although, with just having a recording you won't have the opportunity to throw the empty shotgun at the assailant.
LOL … No, I don't have a universal guaranteed sure fire 100% reliable "answer" for every hypothetical situation.
But, "Shoot first and ask questions later … " isn't a good plan, either, IMHO …
Every person packing a six gun does seem unwise to me …
America already has unprecedented access to guns and ammo, and we have an unprecedented problem with gun violence …
So, no.
"A gun in every purse, in every pocket, tucked in every belt … " is not a solution to the gun violence problem ... It is the problem, IMHO … We need fewer guns, not more. (BTW, I am a gun owner …)

No one ever said shoot first and ask questions later. In fact, one of the first rules in shooting is to know your target and what lays behind.
And just because you are a gun owner does not mean you are a supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

Back in the late 18th century the American colonies -- and then states -- had no standing professional army. They did have a local volunteer citizen militia. It was the military force of that day. And it was maintained for the sake of safety and security of the society.
"If everyone had a gun, we'd all be safer." Ok...let's ask Chris Kyle that question. Oh wait...he was shot at a GUN RANGE, with a GUN IN HIS HAND.
Oh well.
I think the assumption that if everyone had a gun we'd all be safer takes into account that even though a criminal has made that decision to be a criminal, they still have somewhat of a sense of preservation. Meaning if I know everyone has firearms , I might want to rethink whom I attack. In some cases I think this is true, but for others life really doesn't mean that much to them so they will do it anyways such as the case with the guy that killed Chis Kyle.
