Oferchrissakes, people are getting upset about this and it is absolutely mystifying? Well, not really - it's just people who want to pick at Obama over any little thing rather than debating actual issues.
Ohio Republicans are crapping their pants over this quite publicly, and making asses of themselves. If McKinley was so great, why not name some spectacular land mass in Ohio after him? oh wait...
It is the preferred name used by the citizens of Alaska, and it is the name that the native people used for it. There is no reason not to return to the original name. Did McKinley ever even lay eyes on the mountain that was named after him?
I think it's ridiculous that there's any outrage over this. McKinley never even visited Alaska. The fact that the mountain was ever named after him in the first place is ridiculous. You'd think they'd name a mountain after the first person who reached its peak, or something, if you're going to name it after a person, not some random president who never even visited the state let alone the mountain. Ohio can have whatever they want named after him but I think the mountain should have its native name, and the name most Alaskans refer to it as anyway.
I know McKinley was assassinated which played a part in the naming, but where's Mount Kennedy? Kennedy River?

I agree.. while I dislike renaming or changing monuments or the like.. What I read on it.. Seems this is something that was changed that the majority of Alaskans disagreed with.
I'd think the people who might have a dog in the fight would be Alaskans. perhaps people named McKinley.
Seems to me we "stole" the state of Minnesota from the Indians too. They are buying it back however one casino dollar at a time.
You want a disaster? Turn the Black Hills over to the Indians now. The federal government paid the Indian people in what was a very fair payment for the breaking of the Ft. Laramie treaty. That money still sits unused in the bank as the Sioux Indians wallow in alcoholism, indifference, and poverty all while harboring the delusion that the hills will be entrusted to them to not do what they do with everything else that is handed them. The Lakota people can freely travel to the Black Hills whenever they want if they wish to do their religious ceremonies. There aren't any armed guards posted at the "border" crossings to stop them.
Most of what is now Minnesota was ceded to the United States -- legally -- under various treaties.
Paha Sapa, OTOH, was illegally seized from The Dakota People following the Custer Fight … They have never ceded Paha Sapa under any Treaty … The government itself recognizes such by their offer of money decorated with pictures of dead American Chiefs, but the Dakota People just want what is lawfully rightfully theirs …

I have no problem with Denali, but the argument that because McKinley never saw the mountain nor set foot in Alaska validates the change is specious. I have walked and driven down a half dozen streets named after Rev. Martin Luther King Jr I am sure he has never seen in several states I am pretty sure he never visited.

Well, MLK streets were generally named so in neighborhoods where a large percentage of the people he championed actually live. I lived right off MLK Blvd in Denver, and it runs through the city's historically black neighborhood.
Are you saying Mount McKinley is where... people from Ohio settled in Alaska maybe? My point is that he has no tie to the residents or the area, and unless the locals are clamoring to keep the name as is, there is no reason for said mountain to be named for him.
