CNN right now is saying it WAS a rec area, and is now part of the suburbs of Chicago..and has a big crime problem as of late
It's a seasonal recreation area. Crime, mostly DUI, drunken brawls and shop lifting peaks in the summer. Hard drugs, especially heroin, are an increasing issue in this town and all over the US.
I know this is due to budget cuts (not patrolling with two officers), but a lone police officer chasing 3 people just seems stupid. If ever you call (and wait) for back up - this is it. Just seems like poor funding should not equal poor judgment.
The officer had 30 some years on the force. Sounds like he underestimated the situation.

This is a terrible situation LE is finding themselves in. When I was Iraq, we were not allowed to pursue suspected enemy combatants without a layered force (if possible) to back us up. Those that didn't call for such back up would probably run into a trap/ambush (especially when chasing superior numbers). This isn't a luxury LE has, but I think they are going to have to start thinking like a soldier on a battlefield and have situational & tactical awareness as it pertains to combat rather than law enforcement. I don't envy that profession.
Very unusual for anyone in this area to be on foot. More likely, one or more cars were stashed somewhere. If so, they could be in Wisconsin, or Minnesota or Iowa or Indiana or Michigan- maybe even Ohio, by now.
They may not be together.
Unless the slain officer gave dispatch more information than is being released to the public, it's likely going to be very challenging to apprehend these guys, unless they are hanging out together in the area.

I agree.
Every call, especially a domestic, is an opportunity for an ambush. And then there the " suspicious activity" observations, like this one.

With three people someone will eventually shoot off his mouth to the wrong person.
If they have one, he will proclaim his innocence and roll over on the other two in a heart beat.
