How long are presidential administrations and their political appointees not going to do something about the VA and it be okay?

"The VA has 867,000 veterans with pending applications for health care, some of which go back two decades according to the Department's Inspector General but because VA administration sucks just as bad as it's healthcare, they think probably about a third of them are dead because they have no idea how many are actively seeking health care. "Data limitations" with enrollment data prevent investigators from determining how many are actively seeking health care. The report also says VA workers incorrectly marked thousands of unprocessed health-care applications as completed and may have deleted 10,000 or more electronic "transactions" over the past five years."

Watchdog: 900,000 vets may have pending health care requests

And besides the poorly managed VA administration and the presidential administrations, both Democrat and Republican who are supposed to care about these things, what does this say about the Inspector General? Were they hibernating for decades?

Another problem to which Trump picked to give his attention. Hopefully it's not just lip service.

There should have been mass firing at the V.A. long ago.

I actually doubt your report is correct.

Detailed Claims Data - Veterans Benefits Administration Reports

This VA link says that the backlog is 356,000. It also states that it currently serves 4 million Vets, and that in the past four years it has added 940,000 Vets to its compensation rolls.

This report states that there are 188,000 claims more than 125 days old:

Report: VA not doing enough on claims backlog - Stripes

In a way, not too shabby, from my perspective. When I started at Social Security in 1988, the backlog was such that a claimant may wait two years for a decision after filing a claim. That number has vastly improved.

This article also addresses the issue:

VA

I will add that I have noticed a large spike in Veterans receiving service-connected disability filing for Federal disability benefits. Since the Vet will submit all of his/her paperwork from the VA, I get a chance to read the files.

I am constantly appalled at how easy it is for a Vet to get service-connected disability benefits from the VA (perhaps not 100 percent rating, but 50 percent or so). A Vet may leave service and then file for VA benefits years and years after the fact, claiming some knee or back pain, which the records, to me, will clearly show was not 'service connected' (post-traumatic stress claims are a different animal).

I still scratch my head over one guy who was in the Army for a grand total of 19 days. He decided he was not cut out for that life, and was given some type of compassionate discharge. A few years later, he filed for a service-connected disability rating, and by gosh got something (I forgot what exactly). Even one of the Judges I work for, who had been in the military (a military attorney, Lt. Col.), could not explain how this guy got VA services.

Such is life.

Imbeciles?? That is pretty harsh. There are still good men and women who believe in this country and are willing to fight for it despite the negatives coming out of DC.
Obama has never been a fan of the military. It seems he never learned the US military and its mostly volunteer force is what helped make this country great.

If Trump would do half of what he claims he would do he would get my vote. Washington needs to be cleaned up and cleaned out. In business if you don't do your job you are either fired or demoted, it should be the same Gov.

The problem is the overblown gov. agencies. In my state MA. last year the division of child welfare and services actually had kids go missing for months and some died under their watch yet did heads roll? NO. The then Governor Deval Patrick just let them continue on.

The VA is the same way. If the top people are not performing I say FIRE THEM.

No soldier signs up expecting to be injured but it is a possibility and the VA needs to take better care of them. What is really sad is our Gov. seems to care more about the welfare of illegal aliens than it does the injured soldiers but that is a debate for another forum.

Obvious that there are some, wilfully unfamiliar with what has been going on with VA Health Care, that want to deny the progress that has been made. I have been in the VA System sine 2005 and have seen remarkable improvement in spite of massive increases in the demand for care. But, there needs to be more done. Hopefully more Rs will get on board with doing that.

Not just a Promotion, but also a very nice Bonus.
That's exactly the way it works for these Federal Employees. The more you Hide, the faster you move up.

It's an Associated Press story listed on their "Big Story" page. It's not the OP's article, it's an Inspector General's Report about the ongoing Corruption in the Veteran's Administration.

There are several issues here. First is the Inspector Generals' and the fact that many of them are just "acting IGs'". The "acting IG" basically serves at the Pleasure of their Agency or Department Head. They don't have the Congressional Protections that the Appointed IG has - and that "protection" still does not work properly - the IG report goes through the Counsel Officer (which is part of the Administration) & a couple of IGs' have been "fired" due to reports that the Administration didn't like.

VA inspector general steps down amid controversy, claims of whitewashing |September 30, 2015
The acting director of the Veterans Affairs Department’s investigative arm said Tuesday that he will step down after facing criticism from both whistleblowers and members of Congress that he has interfered in the agency’s investigations to protect VA leadership.

The Veteran's Affairs Department has an "acting IG", who is replacing an "acting IG". The US State Department had an "acting IG" for the entire tenure of Hillary Clinton. The number of Departments & Agencies without a REAL Inspector General is staggering ..... AND it's no accident.
IG vacancies hinder efforts to root out fraud |Federal News Radio

The second issue is the Federal Career Employees - the VA (acting) Inspector General was forced out due to "whitewashing" to protect the VA Career Employees. It's next to impossible to FIRE them, they just shuffle the bad eggs from department to department and the Massive Corruption grows. Lois Lerner was like that.

The Congress has to pass laws to do away with this Corruption and institute a policy of ZERO Tolerance - the President must demand it and the Citizens must demand it. The next thing is to make sure that the Inspector General positions are filled with Competent people and the punishment for any LIES to Congressional Committees must be Federal Charges ...... it doesn't matter how Senior the person is.
When the US Attorney General LIED to Congress, he should have been charged with Perjury, same for anyone else. This "hugging the party stuffed animal" and kicking the US Citizens under the bus to protect that Corrupt Stuffed Animal ...... Has Got to Stop!
