I'm deeply saddened. As a human race, we've failed that boy and the thousands that have perished before him in the same way. I hope the European countries can realize that these people are leaving war-ravaged countries and can at least be somewhat sympathetic.
That boy perished because Canada refused his family entry.
Last year, the EU received over 625,000 asylum applications. How many did the USA/Canada/other Arab countries/India/etc. receive and take?

Not true.
"News emerged Wednesday night that the toddler and his family had been refused entry into Canada, but on Thursday relatives clarified that it was Alan's aunt and uncle, and their children, who had been denied refugee status by Canadian authorities."
Agreed. I was making the point that this is not all about Europe.
It should not be about Europe at all. It is ultimately about the lack of stability in Syria. Lack of stability caused by the American Presidents red line in the sand. We weakened the government but did nothing to prop up a new one creating a power vacuum. What we now need to do is arm the male asylum seekers and send them home. This is their fight.
Perhaps use the French foreign legion model. Let them in, train them, send them home.
How so? You claimed that wealthy people dont come refugees. The fact is that they do. They just dont live in refugee camps.
There are plenty of upper middle class Syrians in this initial mass rush for Europe. In fact, my guess is that a disproportionate number of those who have left in recent months are middle class to upper middle class as they have the means to flee.
These people just cross in safe boats operated by reliable guides. Hotel accomodations are arranged in advance. Walking is kept to a minimum. Instead, chartered private taxis driven by trusted drivers are used.
The poor Syrians who lacking cash, need to cross in unsafe boats, walk cross country, and sleep in the streets are more likely to be photographed though.

Comparing those taking inflatable rafts and those hopping out on a jumbo jet is pretty preposterous.

Even so, Canadians should be hanging their heads in shame
For what? Not letting everyone who wants to come over the pond in?
