Is the problem that people can't afford the cost of a flight, or the fact that they are interested in entering a country illegally - in the sense that they intend to immigrate without the required paperwork?

Based on my experiences, I would not be surprised of there are many levels of infatable rafts. Some are leaky, over crowded, under powered, and lack life vests and piloted by amateurs.

Others are probably far more "Zodiac Boat" like with good engines, safety equipment (not really needed, but you never know) skilled operators and are not overcrowded. They can make the crossing from Turkey to nearby Greek islands in say, thirty minutes. While lacking table linens or good looking stewardesses, they are very safe.

I have to admit that I dont have personal knowledge of the refugees in Europe, but I am betting there are core similaries to what I personally saw in Africa. We just hear about the category "B" rafts because disaster strikes them.

The family has never applied to Canada for visas, and it's not exactly Canada's fault that an overloaded raft flipped in choppy water.

Those hopping out on jumbo jets will not be reliant on Europe aid to survive. Letting people in will not solve the problem. What will solve the problem is either A) Propping up Assad B) Demolishing Assad and ensuing a new government comes to power. Taking people in solves nothing.

Why? It was initially, falsely reported that the family had applied for Canadian visas, but that isn't true. It was a different family, related to the drowning victims, who applied for visas. It's unfortunate that someone provided false information to the media suggesting that the drowning victims had been denied a visa when in fact they had not applied for a visa.

In fact the majority of Syrian refugees are sitting in camps in places like Lebanon and Turkey. That is where we should be focusing our help rather than those who pay people smugglers to get them to Europe.

Wealthy people seeking to immigrate to a different country may not be reliant on aid in that country, but there are proper channels to follow regarding immigration. If people choose to circumvent the law; attempt to enter a country illegally, who is responsible when things go wrong?

Pretty difficult to illegally immigrate on a jumbo jet.

Canada has offered to take 10,000 Syrian refugees over a three year period. That is a drop in the ocean. Canada and Canadians have no moral high ground.
