For people to properly assimilate into our culture, they must learn the language. That is both for their benefit, and our overall society.

I am not really sure how anyone can oppose the idea of assimilation into a society people want to become a part of.
I also do not see how Americans can oppose the idea of immigrants learning our laws, language, history, heritage, etc., if they wish for our country to remain united.

`
And that learning can take place over what period of time … ???

Or, wait … Maybe The Wall could be configured as an immense dormitory/classroom, such that no prospective immigrant would be allowed across the border until her/his entire family can pass proficiency culture/history tests -- in English … ???

(Oh, and *they* would have to promise to eat only proper "American" food like hot dogs and burgers, leaving their smelly funky spicy foods elsewhere, where they belong … ???)

No, actually that is not correct at all. It is as if you were to say that since people use 'u r' when texting now makes it officially a way to write the words 'you are' because it is an "offshoot" caused by cell phone use.

It simply contributes to the dumbing down of the US. Younger Europeans I know have a better grasp of the English language than many Americans, because they are taught proper English in school and actually retain what they learn.

Wonder if Palin thinks that UK residents should be speaking 'American' also.

There are many studies that indicate that spanish speaking immigrants to the U.S. are acculturating and learning english at a rate similar to other previously arrived groups such as Italians and Germans. It is a multigenerational process. A "snapshot" of who speaks english taken at any given point in the process is meaningless.

Oh yeah and, Palin is a moron, as are her followers.

Yes … Thirty years back, I served a small rural parish that was very welcoming to immigrant refugees from Laos … Over the years, the congregation grew to about 25% Lao …

The elders who came never learned much English, the middle age generation picked it up slowly over time … The kids and teenagers very quickly came to speaking unaccented "American English," and were still fluent in Lao also … The youngsters did really well in school ...

They were law-abiding very interesting members of the community …

The "Nativist-Know Nothing" attitude toward newcomers is unhelpful, it's insulting to the rest of the human family, and it is sadly self-defeating, since it robs the bigot of life enriching experience ...

Palin isn't knowledgeable enough to be smooth.

Anyone -- especially politicians (most of whom are liars) - really ought know at least SOMETHING about what they choose to shoot their mouths off about. Obama and Clinton's smooth delivery notwithstanding, they're both highly educated, very intelligent men. Political leaders SHOULD be knowledgeable and possess higher than average intelligence. Too many voters in the US, though, seem to resent intelligence and education (not saying you do).

As for appearances being important for politicians: apparently, it's much more important for female politicians. I mean, do you think there would ever be female versions of Donald Trump, Chris Christie, Newt Gingrich, etc? While there are some male politicians who are attractive, most aren't. But Barack Obama, imo, is a very handsome man.

She is just a moron, plain and simple, and an embarrassment to all women on the planet.

Yeah we know.

This is what she said.

She still believed she had an insider's guide to Russia because one can see a small part of it from her home state.
