Christians and Yazidis were largely protected under the regimes of Saddam and Assad. In addition they could practice their faith openly in Syria and Iraq before all the mess happened. Plus there were Christians that were members of the Saddam and Assad regime and there were also military generals of that faith.

Since the conflict that recently happened there has been major persecution especially from Islamist groups. Plus now there has been a huge exodus of them that have fled Syria and Iraq.

Sadly the US and the western intervention who are largely Christian societies have caused a lot of the present tribulations of Syria and Iraq.

Protected from outsiders but not protected against Saddam and his henchmen.

Can you explain why since the overthrow of Saddam at least 80% of all the Christians have fled their own homeland?

Default Chrisitans and Yazidis were protected under Saddam and Assad regime.

The fate of Christians and Yazidis was not very high on the priority list of the people calling the shots on Middle East policy.

Hard truth is that Christians in those countries were a strong voting and support block. They supported these dictators in exchange for protection and in doing so, made themselves targets when these dictators fell, the same as the Muslims who supported those dictators.

If you're trying to say the Bush administration messed up, and then the Obama administration messed up and made it even worse... then yes, you're right.

Yep, like Saddam worried about votes.

Like Saddam ISIS is Sunni. They would not persecute people for supporting Saddam.
