But the tighter crack down on employers was stripped out of the bill before Reagan signed it, and I agree with the other poster that neither Republicans nor Democrats have really solved immigration, so I'm not sure why you think it's partisan.
Businesses depend on cheap labor, which is more in the camp of conservatives to protect than the high salary and union loving Democrats.
People go around fences. Obama's removed the largest number of illegals of any president.
The problem was the dems who controlled congress at the time removed all the funding for increased border security. The agreement was about amnesty but also keeping people from coming over. Reagan and republican in congress signed off on the bill with the dems but when it came time for the dems to hold up their side and pay for the agreement, they wouldn't.
Actually the Obama argument is not quite right either. They changed how they counted the removal numbers. So while yes, the number removed is up, thats more of a reporting issue. He's about average that way.
But yeah, this isnt partisan, this is politicians unwilling to do their job as the situation benefits people they care about. E-verify-simple and easy.
True, they have changed reporting mostly so they could track multiple violators and have legal power against them. But, either way, we've still removed more under Obama ( notice I didn't use the antiquated word deport).
Even at Obama's lowest he's still higher than Bush's highest year:
Also of note, the number of illegals entering has dropped:

That's true but we've had plenty of time since to remedy the issue and neither party has stepped up. Businesses aligned with Republican interests depend on the cheap labor and perhaps Democrats depend on the likely future voters.
The U.S. in the 80s was not much different. Like Obama, Reagan inherited a massive recession from the blunders of his predecessors.
Also similarly, the economic engine took time to get into full swing while Reagan granted amnesty to millions of illegals and refugees who'd already settled here. Even worse, industrial manufacturing was moving overseas while Japanese imports were coming in, so the need for jobs was at least as great as it is today.
Illegal immigration became a tidal wave in the 80's.
Reagan also promised to secure the boarders and crack down on employers of undocumented workers. He did not get around to it. Neither did Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 or Obama. It has not mattered who sat the oval or held the majority.
In terms of the economy. Walmart replaced IBM as the largest private sector employer in the 80's. Mc Donalds quickly pushed IBM to the # 3 spot. Most of these jobs were part time as they are now.
Reagan campaigned on the promise to balance the budget. He never once submitted a balanced budget and the federal debt trebled under his watch. He continues to hold the record for most lifts of the debt ceiling to pay the bills.
I prefer to think Reagan, like all presidents, did the best he was capable of doing with the cards he had been dealt.
Very few of the illegals amnestied in the '80s were "refugees", certainly not millions.
The 1980s had a wave of refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua fleeing the unrest and economic downturn caused by Reagan's interference in those countries propping up brutal right-wing regimes.
Mexican illegal immigration over the past 20 years is a direct result of the Bush/Clinton NAFTA that dropped protectionist agricultural tariffs in Mexico and drove peasants from the land.

Chamber of Commerce is a substantial lobby. Politicians don't bite the wallets that feed them.
You would think one Congress could agree on something as similar as e- Verify. But they can't/won't.
I have mixed feelings on the refugee situation but it's always interesting how moderate Reagan was in reality and how his actions ran counter to many of today's conservative positions.
Not that I supported amnesty then, but at least median family income was on the rise, jobs were being created and the value of the dollar was rebounding from the Carter years, so it wasn`t really the same situation as today.
And of course we didn`t have the trade deals we have now, a near zero fed funds rate or a debt load that prohibited raising interest rates relative to inflation as was done in the early Reagan years.
It`s not really apples and oranges, but its not really apples and apples either.

I don't understand your post.
We've created over 12 million jobs since the recession and the economy has its own momentum now. The only place where jobs are declining is government.
The low participation rate is due to a huge generation of baby boomers retiring and another huge generation getting more education.
The debt tripled under Reagan.
Median household income is rising, albeit slowly but that's typically a lagging indicator after major recessions:

I disagree. The US population has increased greatly and we've also lost some job segments permanently overseas and due to technology and shopping changes. And some were starter jobs and others supporting the middle classes. Add to that the higher cost of living increases of a 1st world country and how are these refugees ever to blend gracefully into our society and thrive without government handouts? And do they also deserve being paid a $15 an hour minimum wage?
It's one thing if our economy was actually healthy, but it's not. We need to first address our own problems like getting those permanently on our welfare system, section 8 and food stamps off those handouts and becoming educated and functioning members of our society. Why do Syrian refugees get to cut ahead in the help line in front of our ghetto rats and trailer trash addicted to meth and crack? And what about all our highways and bridges in need of repair? And where is this help money coming from? I certainly don't want higher taxes.
This also sets a dangerous precedent. Are we to allow citizens of every failing country to move to 1st world countries? Instead, 1st world countries need to step in a fix these failing countries and make their citizens stay there.
