Do the rich have a duty to help the poor in your opinion? For the sake of wanting to hear what the average American's opinion is on the matter, (which in this case will be the CD community) I'm going to leave my personal views out of it, for now..... Thanks for any and all replies.

No I do not have a duty to help the poor. I do because I want to.

Yes they do. It would sure be nice if they would step up and offer help voluntarily, and lots of it. Instead they don't, and government grows and takes equally from the middle class and the working poor who can't afford it.

I think everyone should give to charity. It's the moral thing to do.

No, of course not. But many of them do, in more ways than most people understand. Are all rich people altruistic? Of course not. Many are and they are to a huge degree, i.e. Bill Gates the rest of the billionairse who've pledged to donate a large portion of their vast fortunes.

Yes, especially be giving of your time. Volunteering and giving of your time is something all of us can do, rich and poor.

Me and my kids have never seen our local rich people down at the Mission on busy holidays. We've never seen poor people volunteering there either, just in line recieving.

The middle class in our country is pretty giving, liberal and conservative.

No one is entitled to the property of another, therefore charity is not obligatory.

No one seems to be able to answer "who is rich and who is poor"

When you say duty do you mean forced by the Govt or willful charity?

And yes..Bless you for contributing when YOU feel it's appropriate...However the OP is only asking a simple question....IS there a duty? maybe as it depends of one's personal consciousness. .. It's NOT A DEMAND.. to Pay it Forward..

Anyone who actually feels they got where they got due to other's ..and actually sense there are others who may need a hand up..May want to assist...But again no one is demanding or expecting it...THAT's termed simply "Philanthropy"..which some do from their hearts and other's to gain a "Tax Deduction"...Many do this out of goodness and other do this for financial gain...??????? Does it matter..Nope..as Long as those in need get helped!!
