Guess Puerto Rico is not doing so well these days. Who would of thought that the U.S. owned island governed with progressive laws would not be an ideal place to be, Utopian paradise . But is seems once again that that progressives can't see the forest for the trees in their illogical ways and force something to be something it was never intended to.. How can they be so blind to see most everything they put their fingers in starts turning rancid and reeks of dysfunction and hypocrisy?

Progressive Paradise Lost

Geographical Notes on Puerto Rico

Quote:
...

Puerto Rico, however, has none of these [unique skill base, very low wages, logistical advantage due to being close to major markets]. It doesn’t have a special skill complex. Its wages are low by mainland standards, but not that low (and as I’ll argue in a moment, can’t go that low). And while it’s close to the mainland as the crow flies, it’s fairly slow and expensive to ship things in and out. In a fundamental sense, it’s not that easy to see why there should be a sizable economy on that island in that location.

Put it this way: if a region of the United States turns out to be a relatively bad location for production, we don’t expect the population to maintain itself by competing via ultra-low wages; we expect working-age residents to leave for more favorable places. That’s what you see in poor mainland states like West Virginia, which actually looks a fair bit like Puerto Rico in terms of low labor force participation, albeit not quite so much so. (Mississippi and Alabama also have low participation.)

West Virginia was destroyed by uber liberal policies and the global warming crowd. But yes, West Virginians are a dumb lot because they continue to vote democrat and will always vote democrat even if it kills em.

If we didn't have black people Alabama and Mississippi would be just fine so don't lump us in with them.

From 2013

Quote:
The unemployment rate of blacks in Mississippi is 14.3 percent, more than two and a half times that of whites (5.4 percent)

Progressive Puerto Rico? Liberal policies West Virginia? What the what now???

Reality is more low-wage, little education and no resources Puerto Rico, and resource dependant, low education and no internal investment West Virginia.

West Virginia has basically one product, coal. The #1 enemy to coal is the marketplace, which has made natural gas and oil preferable to coal. Don't blame liberals. Blame capitalism.

But one can blame WV politicians that insist on trying to prop-up coal, instead of getting diversification of industry.

What killed Appalachian coal is that both natural gas and Wyoming coal are less expensive. There's still plenty of coal out there, it just isn't coming from West Virginia.
Electricity Monthly Update

It's not the market's fault that politicians didn't invest in education and non-resources industries. So how is that a lie?

I guess because that kind-of related but not related comment about WV coal in the third post was more more realistic than the nonsensical premise of the thread.
