Kimberly Cates and her daughter were attacked in their dark home on the night of Oct 4, 2009 by imbeciles who were bent on killing for the thrill of it.

Having a gun - in of itself - may not have saved her or her daughter (although it may have). If she would have been trained on her weapon with additional situational training (self-defense with a weapon), she would certainly have improved her chances of saving herself and her daughter. But, even firing a shot into the floor or ceiling may have scared them off, so your point is well taken.

Oh come on now. A gun really ? Wasn't there already enough violence going on in that room ? Those two intruders where probably just very insecure individuals that just needed some hugs. The system they were raised in caused their anger. She should have tried to reason with them and maybe offered them some cookies or something. Then she could have called the police and then waited for their assistance.
Okay now that the sarcasm is over in this case I don't think a gun would have helped, an alarm system in the house would have been better. They were already attacking her so I doubt that a gun could have been drawn and used. Who knows, very sad story though.

An alarm would certainly have been good but at the same time, in this rural area of New Hampshire it would have been over before a cop could have even gotten there.
I'm actually not a big gun advocate but I keep seeing ridiculous threads of guns being used in crimes. As if the people doing the killing were legal gun permit holders.
She used to own a gun. She either got rid of it after Jamie was born or had it put away for the same reason. This was a small town. The first murder there. She felt very safe having grown up in a city. Her and Jamie were both black belts.
She was one of the most gregarious people I've ever known. She could have made friends with anyone. She was asleep when they came in. It am was 4am. She fought for 30 minutes till her throat was slashed. It all shatters my heart. Still does. Had she had the time to register what was going to happen she'd done something. She didn't have that time. Even if she'd had a gun in the nightstand they had cut the power and attacked her with a machete in the dark. I really don't think given the situation a gun would have made a difference.
6 years almost and I still miss her terribly.

The element of surprise by the perps. Had your friend heard those scumbags before she was attacked, she might've had a chance. RIP.
