A trio of students has been suspended from school after one of them brought a Confederate battle flag to campus.
Officials said the disruption occurred Wednesday morning at Rockmart High School in Polk County when a 10th grade boy arrived with a Confederate battle flag attached to his backpack.
"He got dropped off out of his truck and came down the sidewalk just like any other student does," said Principal Wesley Cupp.
He said the sophomore, who is white, then walked through the cafeteria before school started onto the courtyard with the Confederate battle flag strapped to his backpack. That's where he was confronted by two African-American students.
Pretty much. When I was in school, yeah I know, I know, but kids brought guns and knives to school. No one thought anything about it. There wasn't any shootings or stabbings, lock downs or counseling.
Indeed, why the young lad could have taken that piece of cloth and shaped it into a gun and then an imaginary shooting could have...oh this is just all stupid. Really people? A flag?
"He said all three students involved were suspended for the disruption which had nothing to do with Freedom of Speech."
Well that settles it. Nothing to see here!
If the two black students assaulted him unprovoked THEY should have been suspended, not the boy with a flag. Zero tolerance strikes again.
Read the article. It was a drill, not a real lockdown.
It was a "drill" where they were afraid other students were coming to the school with other flags so they locked down the building. Some "drill"
"He said no weapons were found. But later in the morning, the school was put through a lockdown drill with students kept in class after rumors of other students bringing Confederate battle flags surfaced.
"We just did that as a precautionary situation to help maintain and control what could have been a bad situation," said Cupp."
All schools do drills. They decided to do one after an incident occurred and rumors surfaced of further trouble. Nothing wrong with practicing a drill before you might need to employ a real one.
The premise of the thread is misleading - the drill was a response to the fight and the rumor that more fights would occur. The punishments were due to the fight, not the flag, though the flag played a role in provoking the fight. I don't see what the school did that shows ludicrous zero-tolerance-policy overkill or an indication that the country has gone full on stupid. Would have been better to just ignore it and not have any consequences for the kids that were fighting?
