I think Maher is pretty much on-target. From what I have read here, conservatives think that it's just fine to be rich and advocate for lower taxes on the rich. Liberals, contrarily, think beyond their own self-interest and will try to raise taxes on wealth, even if it means that they pay more. That's how I feel. It's civic virtue.
Here's where you go wrong. It is liberals aka the Democrats that want illegal aliens to remain here so they can make the richer richer by working for less. So in reality they are rooting for the rich. All the while these illegal aliens are taking jobs from minorities and other Americans whom the Democrats claim are for the American worker and higher wages. Makes no sense at all and in fact is the height of hypocricy.

This is an example of the extreme partisanship that has the country in such a mess.

It also isn't healthy for a democratic society to have wealth concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz has wise words regarding this.

Why would anyone think it is just fine to have a country where the odds of your success can be predicted by your parent's zipcode?
As I said, you want their money so you demand wealth redistribution cloaked as taxes.

That's no different than wealth redistribution cloaked as Q.E.

The point is that it isn't for you to tell someone how much he is allowed to make and what he should do with his money. He isn't forcing anyone to work for him. If he is such a lousy employer, why do people choose to work for him?

This is country is still somewhat free. No one forces you to work for someone you don't like, or some place where you feel you are being treated unfairly. Move on.

why are liberals AGAINST equality??

a ''progressive'' tax is NOT FAIR...why should we DISCRIMINATE against people based on their 'reported' income....america is supposed to be about equality and fairness..the oppertunity to succeed...not disciminate....why should we discriminate (a crime by the constitution) when it comes to taxes???... a flat tax would at least be an equal rate for each filer.... but not using income and using spending would be the best

It isn't that the rich are evil or manipulating that outcome. It is government that is doing this.

You can not start up ANYTHING without restrictions, fees, major insurance needs and so forth.
The costs make start ups almost non existent.

We need lawsuit and lawyer reforms.
Regulation reforms.
Fee reductions so people can start things.

That is the real cause and issue. Don't use the tread to promote class warfare, because it's the government that is the problem.
The rich get richer because they were the only ones well established before more regulations came in to stop competition and new people coming in.

The founders of Home Depot, Target, Walmart and other major places all say they could not be in existence today if they had to start in this regulated world.

How many of them started poor or from a modest family and lived by a paycheck like most people do and was successful enough by hard work to reach billionaire status compared to how many inherited a dynasty?

When you allow the devil to escort you to the dance, he generally wants something from you afterwards.

The first is one of equity. Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, is worth about $28.8 billion, according to Bloomberg. Amazon’s market capitalization is about $144 billion. Why should individual New Yorkers who are worth less, or who work for smaller companies, pay the full tax rate, while Amazon gets a special discount?

What’s more, Amazon is in a competitive industry. Why should New Yorkers who own or work at Amazon's competitors such as Barnes & Noble or small independent bookstores be taxed to support their business rival? Why should literary agents, publishers and authors who increasingly fear Amazon’s market clout be taxed at full rates to subsidize Amazon?

a) we are a country of immigrants, who came here for a better life.
b) liberals believe that immigrants shouldn't be working for less. That's why we liked Cesar Chavez so much.
c) Americans aren't working for the wages that are offered immigrants.

Meanwhile, the GOP is always for cutting taxes, that fall mainly on the wealthy and for paying for those tax-cuts but slashing the social safety net. To argue that the Republicans help ordinary people and the Democrats are for the rich, one must live in Alice's Wonderland.
