By the time they had access to modern weapons, of that era, it was usually too late. Additionally, most of those weapons and ammunition had to be scavenged. They weren't equipped nor did they have easy acquisition through purchase.
I think we learned three very important lessons from the Native Americans:
1. You should protect your borders.
2. You should never be at a major disadvantage in arms.
3. You should preserve important aspects of your culture.
Agreed.

Funny you should mention Japan during WWII. Admiral Yamamoto warned the Japanese Emperor not to invade the mainland United States, saying that because of the 2nd Amendment, there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
The U.S is the only country in the world that the right to bear arms in the constitution. Since our Republic was founded we had never had a dictatorship or tyrant in power or wars in our soil (apart from the Civil War)
You can't say that about Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, China, Korea and Southeast Asia Countries , African countries, Arab Countries and all Latin Republics in the Americas.
If you go back just 100 years, the millions and millions of people that have died in those countries because of tyrants and wars created by bad governments and the people didn't have a right to bear arms....if we go back further is more deaths.
the question is, why would we want to have that for our country?......I rather have our mass shootings which NO law can prevent than to have that culture of wars and tyranny that millions of people have died because governments can control better the masses if they take away the right of their people to bear arms.
Look at the numbers......just look at EUROPE and ASIA alone in just the past 75 years....the wars and tyrants that caused millions of deaths and poverty and most of those countries owning a gun is prohibited.......do we want to go that route because some liberals get emotional about mass shootings in the U.S. which is the exception and compare to other crimes is really small?
one thing for sure about government and tyrants, history always repeats itself....is not a matter of how....but where and when.
So you think in this time of new weapons of mass destruction available to any government so inclined, that our individual guns would make a difference.
I see the real enemy as feeble minded losers lurking with their stockpile of firearms and ammunition plotting to ambush and kill as many as possible.

I would bet that the overwhelming majority of Americans throughout history, would say you are the real threat, with your false claim that people exercising their Constitutional right are plotting to kill as many as possible, as an argument to strip them of their right to bear arms.

Yes. The 2nd Amendment certainly is a deterrent for another country that would try and invade the US.
If we place armed police, government agents, and security in all classrooms, malls, theaters, and public places, isn't that a slippery slope to the tyranny that the 2nd amendment is supposed to prevent?

WE could always allow citizens to be armed in these place instead.

Sure they are. As is the 2nd. Would you as a leader of another country want to try to take a poke at a nation where you'd not only have to contend with their military, but with an armed populace fighting along side them?
