If you want security you use the government servers, these are closed networks. A Gmail account is going to be very difficult to hack into if it's set up properly (e.g. good password). The big issue there is someone at Gmail having access to it. The security of a private server in your house is partly going to depend on the competency of those that set it up which apparently in this case was dismal based on some of the reports.
Most attacks on servers are random where they are probing for vulnerable scripts, software and common passwords using bots. It's a daily barrage that never stops. Someone successful at this would probably never even know it was Clinton's server. If on the other hand a foreign government was aware of this server and people with skill were tasked to hack it the probability of them compromising it is very high especially considering what is already known about the security of it.

Nothing is reasonable about the Secretary of State using a private server, gmail account or anything else. Just because someone else did it to some degree or another is no excuse. There is no logical reason for anyone to go through this much trouble unless they are purposely trying to hide information.
