For the uninformed: Native American is traced through maternal descent in most tribes. (My friend's daughter's husband is Native American; their children are not). I do not know what % the government considers minority, but the person is always Native if the maternal line continues.
It seems that the government has "accidentally" lost a trust that gave native americans possibly 100 billion dollars. At a time of economic upheaval and over 9 trillion dollars in debt... we have more to pay more... I would like to pay that 100 billion as it is what we all owe and it is legitimate... at the same time I hear all these presidential candidates wanting to increase spending for socialized programs (albeit mostly democrats)... the economic stimulus package with a 500 million bailout on foreclosures and 150 million in checks to help people "spend" more and I am really worried... when are we going to head in the right direction? When?

I'm with you on this one...It's ridiculous that they are still living on reservations. It's like keeping people in zoos.
My dad did contract accounting and business work for the Lakota up in the Dakotas on one of their reservations. People like the Lakota are poor but they don't want to leave because their families are very important to them; Indians are often very family-oriented people and their ties to their family mean more than family ties for white people.
There is also alot of prejudice still against Indians by whites. My dad was remarking how alot of people in South Dakota treat Indians badly, with alot of mistrust and contempt. My family is from Oklahoma and we are part Indian on my dad's side, no tribal affiliation but my grandfather is part Cherokee (1/4). For his generation, Indians were considered dirty, shiftless people so if you had any Indian ancestors you never talked about them. Even today there's some prejudice against Indians in Oklahoma, especially among old people, and Indians often live with their own people and don't always mingle with outsiders.
Have your family killed and have other fellow family members be forced to move from place to place(trail of tears and etc) and your property taken by goverment....That's the best way
I am Caucasian and Ojibway (Chippewa) Native American. Let me clear up some things as I have seen a couple ignorant and offensive posts on here. I am not personally looking for money and don't expect to get any as I do not officially belong to the Ojibway tribe. The native americans inhabited this land before anyone, and it was essentially stolen from them. Yes migration and colonization does happen throughout history. The problem here is that the government kept pushing the native americans off of their land, further and further away. They signed treaties with the tribes and rarely followed up on their end of the bargain. Those tiny indian reservations that you see dotted on the maps are all the natives have left despite hundreds of treaties and promises that were made with natives.
Do I think they deserve money from our government? ABSOLUTELY. IMO, Never has a race or group of people been treated so poorly overall by our government, not even slaves. This issue hasn't even had a fraction of the attention it deserves, and it is now 2008. Most native americans that live on reservations are living in extreme poverty. They also deserve money to help build up their schools, police force and perhaps buy back some of the land that was stolen and/or promised to them.
And no, asking Native Americans to assimilate into American culture is one of the most absurd, ignorant and disrespectful statements anybody can make. A lot of them have already anyway. It is a dying culture.
As far as the casino thing, not all tribes have casinos. Its not like if you are native american you are allowed a casino. Many areas don't allow them at all.

IMHO i really like your post your response and your dignity and your guts and endurance. hats off. here comes rep. unlike other groups i dont see the angry righteous victim and entitlement thing goin at all among native americans. they did not ask for the tag and they would not wear anyway. like most that don't wear the victim tag, native americans are movin on up.
