Someone who cares about the welfare of the people:
their health, big proponent of universal healthcare are we?
their housing, no problem with HUD, Section 8 housing?
their civil rights, same sex marriage is on the top of your list?
Really!?!
Too funny.
You are twisting JFK's words. His quote says nothing about Big Government programs.
So yes, libertarians care about the welfare of other people and are huge advocates of civil rights. We just don't steal from hard working taxpayers.
really.
BTW, you might want to read this definition;
civil rights definition
A broad range of privileges and rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and subsequent amendments and laws that guarantee fundamental freedoms to all individuals. These freedoms include the rights of free expression and action ( civil liberties ); the right to enter into contracts, own property, and initiate lawsuits; the rights of due process and equal protection of the laws; opportunities in education and work; the freedom to live, travel, and use public facilities wherever one chooses; and the right to participate in the democratic political system.
From the view of a Conservative, I'd say the headline of this thread is pure woo.
He would be very proud of President Obama, and in agreement with him on all issues. On the other hand, the pathetic state of the Conservative party would likely shock him to death.
Kennedy and Obama are almost complete opposites. If Kennedy were running today, Obama would not vote for him.
What mainstream Democrat is talking about taking away guns? And the context of the quote is the importance of the Second Amendment in Citizens defending the nation in case of an invasion.
Kennedy was talking about lowering the top marginal rate from 0ver 90% to 70%. The top marginal rate in 2015 is 39%.
The top rate capital gains was 25% in 1963. Oh the poor put upon investor class and the 15% top rate they pay!
Most of them. What they say is only a hint at what they want. The typical scenario is: we don't want to take away "the thing" we only want to regulate it. When the regulating fails, as it always does, the next step will be to allow "only certain people who meet strict requirements" to have access to "the thing" until we figure out how to remove it entirely.
It isn't rocket science to see beyond the words and understand the intent.
As for Kennedy: Yes this is true, however disingenuous as well. Back in the day there were not any of the tax loopholes the political class (on both sides) have invented for their corporate masters. Even if you raise the corporate tax to 90% and personal tax on the wealthy to 70% (again) they'll still pay next to nothing as they navigate the corrupt tax laws we have. It has been proven time and time again that higher taxes only hurt the poor and middle class.
The only solution is a fair or flat tax.

Rather than Seacove having a rational counterpoint and moving to sarcasm showed you to be correct.
No Libertarian I know wants anything like what they, left and right for that matter, claim they do.
He just would not fit today's Democratic party. Consider these John F Kennedy quotes;
"By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fear of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the 2nd amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationship, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the 2nd Amendment will always be important."
"A tax cut means higher family income and higher business profits and a balanced federal budget.... As the national income grows, the federal government will ultimately end up with more revenues. Prosperity is the real way to balance our budget. By lowering tax rates, by increasing jobs and income, we can expand tax revenues and finally bring our budget into balance."
“Every dollar released from taxation, that is spent or invested, will create a new job and a new salary.”
Correct. And I would add to that the fact that he went toe to toe with the Soviets and won. Can't say the same for today's Democrats.
By the way, Democratic Party doesn't do purges, we leave that up to the GOP and the Tea Party. If you miss the conservatives who were prominent in the Democratic party, there absence rest firmly on the Tea Party.
Except for when the Democratic Party purged virtually all Blue Dog Democrats a few years ago. In fact, there are so few in congress now that we never hear the term anymore. Yeah, except for that purge they never purge.
