Default Banning retail stores from being open on Thanksgiving

No, this country doesn't shut down during holidays, people want to shop and people need to work, it's not a big deal.

Why is it people always look to laws and bans for things they can do on their own?

Stay home and the stores won't open.
lose your job or not get paid?

It hasnt always been like this.
This IS true, just not in your personal experience.

I own a retail business and in my personal experience - we've never closed on Thanksgiving. Not in 20 years.

It's one of the busiest days of the year.

The local and not so local competition that is closed or closes early in the day? We love them.

My employees? We ask well in advance and get commitments. We don't demand or schedule and say "too bad, you're working". Some will work a few hours in the morning, go home for the rest of the day, some will come in after they eat - and are happy to get away from their annoying relatives or screaming nieces and nephews.

Obviously they are paid time and a half and we give out a "Turkey Day" bonus to them as well.

We celebrate a few days later on Sunday. Our family members who can't wait (we host) and HAVE to eat turkey on Thursday? They do. And then they join us on Sunday.

Mixed feelings.

But clearly, this country needs to shut the hell down for one day, and Thanksgiving is a good a day as any.

People did just fine when those places used to close. No one starved to death.
