Do you take them?

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Physiology, states that statins' "...impact on other biologic properties of stem cells provides a novel explanation for their adverse clinical effects."

Specifically, the study states that such adverse effects include advancing the "process of aging" and also notes that "...long-term use of statins has been associated with adverse effects including myopathy, neurological side effects and an increased risk of diabetes."

Myopathy refers to skeletal muscle weakness.

It's more or less a 3 lb. lump of cholesterol and fat. So anything the progressive left can do to insidiously scoop it away with brain-material eating statin drugs is sure to give them more peace, and less piece, of mind.

The first statin I was on caused me MAJOR problems. I would end up sleeping about 14 hours a day and have to take a nap after walking to the mailbox (about 60 feet from my front door). So they took off that one and tried another weaker one. That one gave me the telltale leg muscle cramps.

Now I am on Fenofribrate, which is working well for me, but as I understand it, it is not a statin.

I would want to read the study before I would be willing to accept NaturalNews.com's interpretation.

I can tell you that the reason statins are falling out of favor is that while they do tend to reduce LDL in most patients, we aren't seeing the expected extension of life that was widely predicted. Apparently LDL wasn't quite as bad as we had been led to believe...

Um, I used to work there...

The FDA never says anything is 'safe.' The agency says an article is 'safe and effective for its intended use' and that is based entirely on a risk/benefit ratio.

All drugs have risks. Most drugs have benefits. If the benefits outweigh the risk, the Agency will allow the drug to be marketed in interstate commerce. If the risks outweigh the benefits, the drug is not approved for distribution in interstate commerce.

Unfortunately, the risk/benefit ratio is based on the scientific knowledge of the day. Statins are no different. When they were introduced, two major factors were considered dispositive: (a) the overwhelming majority of people who died of heart attacks had high levels of LDL, and (b) statins reduced LDL - but with some risks. Thinking we could reduce the number of heart attack victims, FDA approved statins, but required they be prescribed by an 'informed intermediary' (the legal term for a doctor at the FDA).

Years later, the expected reduction in the rate of heart attacks has not materialized, even though the drugs have been on the market for two decades. Now some are questioning whether the LDL levels are all that important in the first place.

Once again we learn that what we believe about medicine depends largely upon when you attended medical school...

There are studies that indicate drinking distilled water will help to dissolve and remove the insoluble calcium and minerals that block the arteries good cholesterol will stay in the body, and many cases people recover from a great many deceases .
