“Having no national team to belong to, having no flag to march behind, having no national anthem to be played, these refugee athletes will be welcomed to the Olympic Games with the Olympic Flag and with the Olympic Anthem,”
Who's is going to pay for this holiday for no-hope-in-hell-of-winning refugees? When was the last time a Syrian won a medal? And if they are training they aren't supporting themselves.
FWIW, this was done during the last summer Olympics games for Sudanese refugees and others. They came in under the Olympic flag as "independents."
It is not a new program.
Also, most Olympic athletes aren't all that "competitive." There are many countries who have never won a medal yet they have participated.
You all should watch some Opening Ceremony clips on youtube from the London Olympics and China where they show how many medals a country has won in Olympic history. A large amount have "0."

It says in the article you linked to that the Olympic Committee started a $2 million fund for this.

2004 in Athens, 3 Syrians have one Olympic medals since 1984(which is about average for countries fielding athletes in the Olympics). It didn't say anywhere in the article that the refugees that might compete were Syrian though(there's 20 million refugees around the world and most aren't Syrian).

You're not paying for it, so what do you care?
