I'm just wondering why people give money to panhandlers. There are several in my city near highway off ramps and while waiting at a red light, I saw 2 or 3 people hand over a few bucks.

Just my opinion, but I think that most of these panhandlers are drug addicts or alcoholics who are too lazy to get a job.

People who give money to panhandlers, why do you do it?

Some people think it's the right thing to do, some do it for self gratification and others like yourself don't contribute to them at all. Beauty is, it's your choice.
Do you support govt run welfare schemes?

People give money because it feels good and hardly costs anything to do it. Unfortunately it doesn't help any to give a buck to a panhandler other than giving a giver a good feeling.

Never do I give money to panhandlers. I do give them sandwiches. I've done it dozens and dozens of times. They have always accepted the food.

I give them money because I feel sorry for them. I don't care how they spend it

Because I can afford it. I wouldn't if I couldn't.

So they buy dope or booze. Shrug. Is that the worst thing on the world?

I don't typically give money to homeless people, I give them food. What difference does it make to you what I do with my own money?

You are enabling an drug addict or alcoholic when you do that. You are also enabling them to stay on the street and not seek employment.

The last place I lived, it was illegal to panhandle. The cops would run them off. It was great.

Food is fine, but money will probably just be spent on booze or drugs. If you are looking to throw some money somewhere, send some to me. I could use some new whiteboard erasers in my classroom.

I do.

What they do with the money is their business; I don't give it with strings. No one is panhandling who's rich.
