Nobody knows exactly what they were originally used for. Stop pretending anyone does, it's all a guess at this point.
We know for damn sure it wasn't grain storage.
For two reasons:
Actual contemporary granaries have been excavated, and
Only idiots would construct something like the pyramids for the purpose of grain storage. And the ancient Egyptians weren't idiots. Also, it takes an idiot to look at the internal structure of a pyramid and think "Grain storage - makes sense."
Pretending that "we don't know exactly" means "every wild guess is equally valid" does mesh in nicely with Carson's creationism, so I guess he's consistent in his intellectual laziness.
