Nah, Lincoln declared it had been "fairly captured" and had the White House band play it the day after Lee's surrender. (Not making this up.)

So....the Confederate battle flag shouldn't be controversial , at all
Nor Bonny Blue, or the first second and third National flags of the Confederacy. Getting the point?
The thing is, most people are ignorant about history. Many don't even know about Japanese attempts at genocide in China and SE Asia. Upwards of 20 million Chinese were exterminated by the Japanese during WWII. They were considerably worse than the Nazis as far as treatment of conquered peoples. Of course since they weren't white Europeans they aren't held to the same standards as the Germans.

oh contaire, nearly 700 senior Japanese military officers and government officials and a few heads of Japanese Zaibatsu (Industrial conglomerates like Mitsubishi or Kawasaki) for using slave labor or POWs went on trial by a Nuremberg Tribunal in 1947 and were sentenced to death. Included in this were Hideki Tojo and the Japanese officer who was commanded to build the real Thailand-Burma Railroad and the Bridge Over the River Kawi in Thailand . It would have been a much larger number but many committed Sepuku (cutting the belly) to preserve their honor by dying at their own hand instead of an Allied firing squad or at the end of the rope.

There was much pressure to include Emperor Hirohito as Japan's ultimate war criminal. That would have left his 6 year old son Akihito as Emperor under a Regent kind of like China's Last Emperor Pu Yi. General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur Japan's new Administrator and Truman's New Secretary of State George C, Marshall understood and concluded that Hirohito as a front man for the Occupation and reconstruction to follow was more valuable alive than dead especially after he accepted his new role in the new Japan . Hirohito gave up his god like status and spoke out for the New Japan a Constitutional Monarchy. Things went well and in 1951 the American Occupation of Japan ended with the exception of Okinawa and the Bonin Islands (Iwo Jima) returned to Japan in 1971. ( I would have negotiated making Iwo American territory since so much American blood was shed on it to make it forever America. An American flag should fly over Mount Surabotchi ) The Japanese accepted that only the US flag would fly over its two cemetaries (The same is true at Normandy) where most of our 13,000 dead rest. Hirohito remained Japan's Emperor until 1989 when Akihito became Japan's current Emperor.

ISIS flag should be the most controversial and despised flag, but the Left doesn't think so. I'm not surprised.

I am confused, they are not held to the same standards as the Germans by whom?

The public display of Nazi flags is protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post%E..._of_Nazi_flags

You certainly can display Nazi flags in the United States. In European countries, that is another story. I believe if Japan invaded Europe, then they wouldn't allow Japanese rising sun flag either. I don't think skin color has anything to do with anything.

Matter of fact, many German nationalists view Japan during ww2 a much better ally. That makes nationalists scary. I wouldn't say who is worse if i were you.

Seppuku.is ritual suicide. Hara kiri is the "belly cutting"". The two have differing meanings, The Samurai traditions being paramount. Hari Kiri carries less honor than seppuku. One is for a Diymo, a lord, the other for his samurai. Those who serve. In defeat, they die. Japanese culture is ..,esoteric.
