In 1971, the United States ratified the 26th Amendment, lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. In retrospect, that may have been a mistake. The idea, in those Vietnam War years, was that 18-year-olds, being old enough to be drafted, to marry and to serve on juries, deserved a vote. It seemed plausible at the time, and I myself have argued that we should set the drinking age at 18 for the same reasons.

But now I’m starting to reconsider. To be a voter, one must be able to participate in adult political discussions. It’s necessary to be able to listen to opposing arguments and even — as I’m doing right here in this column — to change your mind in response to new evidence.

Interesting thought, and the recent conduct of young people on college campuses is certainly worrisome. I've always been against punishing entire groups for the sins of a few however.

The author does have a point about a large segment of millenials however. They seem to believe they are entitled, spoiled brats, who have a right to never be offended. It's no coincidence that this same bloc of people put Obama in the White House twice.

That's exactly what voting is: picking a master to work the slaves.

By voting you are punishing others.

I tend to agree. One thing that has been demonstrated time and again over the last few decades is that a great many college students are seriously lacking in maturity, any kind of concept of personal responsibility and have no clue about economics. When mommy and daddy have provided all their lives, the entire concept of earning something is hard for many to grasp.

Only thing-that's not true of all college students. Even more, many young people go to work full time and do school part time, they don't deserve to be lumped with the spoiled children that we've been seeing at Mizzou and Yale.

i feel voters at least local issues should only be for property owners, they are more invested in the local community. not talking about state or federal election

These perpetually offended, 'adult children' are in for a huge shock once they leave the padded rooms that colleges have become. The real world doesn't mold itself to you like spineless colleges have.

By bending to the will of the loudest SWJ's, colleges have done a huge disservice to these kids.

what difference does it make who's voted in? they're all garbage. none of them care about us, they care about self preservation and how they can get their hands on the next pile of money from their corporate overlords.

The draft went away with Viet Nam. What does being shot at have to do with anything?

Of course, if things keep "progressing" as they are, we may just have the draft again.

The thought police hard at work.

The problem is that the truly warped ones figured this out a long time ago. Their solution is to become professors and teachers assuring they'll never have to leave the warm cozy world of academia. The perks are; they get paid by the very system they despise, and have the opportunity to mold minds as they see fit.

Imagine what the Professor Click method of teaching is... $60K a year to teach your kid her brand of nonsense.

Bingo!

The system isn't broken; the politicians, lobbyists and special interests who exploit the system are the problem.
