This border problem has been a problem since I moved home to Texas 25 years ago. IMO, the grass roots from each side want it stopped, but the folks who run DC do not.

The Republicans have the house and senate. Seen anything coming from them about illegals? All I see is planned parenthood and shut down the government over the cause of the month.
So the Republicans aren't doing anything about this problem? Here are a couple of bills they have produced just this year. So you were sayin? Think the Democrats will sign them?
Deportation doesn't work. The silly scare tactics of terrorists streaming across the border is nothing more than rhetoric. If they're coming in they're doing it legally.
Self-deportation will if they have no means to support themselves. It was the FBI Director, Robert Mueller who stated that those from known terrorist countries have slipped through out border right along with illegal Mexicans. Is he pushing scare tactics? Korans, etc. have been found near our border also. Oh, you have a crystal ball that terrorists will "always" come here legally?
Which administration unnecessarily invaded Iraq thus destabilizing the region which lead to the creation of ISIS?
Which administration supported the Arab Spring (when it started long after Bush left office), armed Libyan jihadists, supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, called for the downfall of Assad and has done almost nothing to counter ISIS?
I would also remind you that ISIS formed in SYRIA, not Iraq, and they formed after the attempt to topple Assad... all years after Bush left office and all supported by Obama.

Is it possible? Sure. Can we prevent it 100%? Not a chance. Our best chance of preventing terror attacks is to limit our involvement in the Middle East. To do that we need to find ways to limit our need for fossil fuel.
Planning to overthrow all those countries has been the US playbook for a very long time.
Overthrowing Syria goes back to 1957.
Leaving Iraq created the environment by which ISIS rose, not invading. That was AQ and the Taliban.
That is like saying pulling a knife from someone's chest lead to death not the knife going in.
