That's nuts. They should put them in all the schools though. Stuff can and does happen in the higher income neighborhood schools too. My district has them in every single high school. I walked through them a gazillion times, it's really no big deal. I wouldn't even want my kid going to a school that didn't have them. Better safe than sorry.
If someone wanted to kill students do you think they would be so stupid as to carry through a metal detector or would they just wait in the parking lot and start shooting as the kids all exit the schools?

This is what the Left does. They remove safety checks then blame someone else when something happens. The Left is INCAPABLE of keep us safe.

Not even in the parking lot. Kid goes into a first floor classroom and has it passed to him through the window. In many schools kids will go to their first period classroom before school starts but the teacher is required to be in the hallway so no one's in the room watching.

Born and bred..Manhattan, Bronx, Queens.

And I was living there when they first put in the metal detectors..back in the 80's.
How's about you ?

Article talking about it..dated 1989
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/09/06/ny...n-schools.html
The use of metal detectors in five public high schools in New York City reduced weapons possessions and other threatening incidents in the last school year, the Schools Chancellor, Bernard Mecklowitz, said yesterday.
..
In a report to the Board of Education, the Chancellor said that 820 weapons had been found on students or near the search areas at the five schools. Only five of the weapons were firearms, he said; the others included knives, box-cutters and other tools that could be used as weapons. Some are illegal and others are prohibited by school regulation, he said. Fear of Being Discovered

Based on the quality of kids going to NY schools these days you not only keep the metal detectors, occasionally you pat them down and keep cameras everywhere to observe drug dealings.

I was born in Brooklyn, but it's gotten off the hook.

Normal lives matter! Drug cultures and idiocy does not matter.

It's like assuming guilt before innocence.

I live in Colorado, in the Denver metro. No detectors in my local schools or theaters even now.

Do we have more faith in our neighbors or are we just stupid?
I think the former.
That depends almost entirely on who your neighbors are, doesn't it? We don't have metal detectors here either, but we also don't have shootings, but adults or children. Would you have faith in all of your neighbors in south Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, parts of New York? I doubt it.

Metal detectors should be removed. They are students, not inmates.

The NYC schools system is the most diverse in the world. NYC is also among the safest large cities in the world. I'm not sure what the problem is here...
Weapons are still being found but note what I bolded as the reason.

Over 1,200 weapons taken from NYC students last schoolyear | New York Post
It’s shocking — five Tasers were among the more than 1,200 firearms, knives, boxcutters, razors and other dangerous objects confiscated from city students in the 2013-14 school year, NYPD officials told The Post.
..
Metal detectors picked up 712 weapons — about 58 percent of the total. Another 42 percent were recovered after tips from staff or students. Despite the stigma metal detectors can bring to a school, cops and some principals say they remain essential to school safety. The use of the scanners is under review by Mayor de Blasio.
..
Students don’t arm themselves to commit crimes but to protect themselves in dangerous neighborhoods or in case of conflicts with other kids, according to NYPD Inspector Charles Mc-Evoy, executive officer of the School Safety Division.
