But it's still lower than what it was prior to the 1920s (adjusted for inflation). You can't use a period of when tuition was artificially low as a benchmark. That's like saying that 2% interest is ridiculously high because in 2009-2015 it was 0%. Using unusual extremes as your benchmark will result in inaccurate conclusions.
But you can calculate what $40,000.00 in 1920 would be equivalent to in 2015.
$497K.
Which is why only the rich went to colleges in the US back in the '20s.

Tuition was still fairly low, and students could attend Wharton Business School for just $250 a year.

Tuition wasn't directly related to inflation. It was related to median income... which back then was estimated to be a teacher's salary.
The reality is that only people who the universities deemed valuable attended. Value was assessed based on two factors. The majority who attended were those who were admitted based on extraordinary merit. The rest were admitted based on their ability to pay the tuition rate (rich people, essentially).
So you had people who were actually worthy of college funding and those who could afford a seat. That's how it's always been.
If you want to attend college, either be worthy of it by merit or be able to buy a seat. Which kind of attendee do you want to be?
Brown is a private university with an endowment of over $3 billion, so its tuition isn't a concern to me and $10 million/year is chicken-feed.
Good post.
You could just stop right after "Brown is a private university"
PRIVATE.
Why is this so hard for some of the posters here to understand? It's their decision, they could spend $100million on a football stadium or a statue of bugs bunny for all it matters to me.
When it turns out that this program is a total flop (or worse... it actually stokes racial tensions) Liberals will immediately claim that it was underfunded.
I am offended by the name of the University. "Brown" . As a non Hispanic it is hurtful to me. I suggest a name with no color.
