Internet discussions like this one are exactly what ISIS is hoping for. They can point their prospective followers to this thread and say, "see, those kafir hate islam. We are in a war to protect islam and we need to eliminate the kafir."

In 1948 the United States and Britain did something that angered muslim and arab people everywhere. That something is the raw wound that is at the center of the storm today. People have only gotten angrier with time. And they've only gotten beaten up more and more since they began expressing their anger. Does anyone know how many civilians were killed by western attacks in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan in the '90's and early 2000's? Hundreds of thousands. Fuel for anger. Do you know how many civilians in Syria have been killed by western attacks since, let's say, 2012? A whole bunch and the number is rising. More fuel for anger. Since the '40's various groups have become more and more effective in mobilizing anger. The mobilization is only a fraction of the angry people; mainly young unemployed men with no direction and no hopes or dreams left. The mobilized groups went by the names PLO, then PLF, then Al Queda, to name just a few. But now a new group ISIS has come up with a different theme with which to mobilize angry young men (and some women): the establishment of a government based on Islamic teachings and principles. That's the propaganda anyway. It worked well 1,000 years ago and they figure it can work again. So far it's been an effective recruitment tool. But the resulting international situation is a complete and utter mess. There are no innocent, blameless, put-upon, victimized, holier-than-them governments in this. Not a single one. It's not a case of civilization vs barbarism, one religion vs another, west vs east, or white man vs everybody else. It's monkey vs monkey just like in a jungle. While the majority of civilians take the brunt of it all, one way or another, as they have throughout recorded history.
And there are many more. I have Muslim friends who are sickened by this violence. They do things on a local level. There are over 2.5 million Muslims in America - the vast majority of which are peaceful people who are happy to live in our society (most people killed by radical Muslims are non-radical Muslims).
While perhaps this is a start(of what I don't know), just because some in a community are "sickened", it doesn't appear to be solving the underlying actions of more than a few. I think we can draw a parallel to the actions of many in the inner city....many are "sickened" there also with all the violence/killings but the violence/killings go on and on and on and have been for decades now and it's not getting any better.

Thank you for that, I was thinking the same thing a bit ago while reading some of the posts in these threads, i.e. "we need to quit allowing muslims in the country" "we should kick them all out" "drop a few big bombs in the M.E. like the ones we dropped on Japan" Good God, don't people realize that ISIL is combing the web for crap like that so that they can prove to their potential converts that the West wants all Muslims dead?
Yes, self censor because when people continue spouting outrageously hateful epithets about Middle Eastern people on a forum ISIL and Al Queda and any other group out there which is recruiting will find those posts and make sure they use them in recruiting. Why is it so hard to understand that when people talk like that they are helping the enemy?

Because there is no Muslim Pope, no Cardinal, no Bishop...there are diverse groups of Muslims who pray under the auspice of a scholar or Imam, how are "all Muslims" supposed to stop the violence of people who they don't know and may well not even share a common language? It's as crazy as claiming that Blacks are somehow responsible for stopping gang and criminal activity when the majority of blacks are not criminals and don't belong to gangs and are unlikely to know anyone who is. How hard would you laugh if someone suggested that whites are responsible for every white school shooter?
